Tooth Whitening Basics

Going out to a new year’s party with friends, job interview, TV interview or a big presentation, these are just some of the events that people take notice of your bright white teeth. A perfect white smile not only looks good but commands attention and shows you take care of yourself. It’s not enough these days just to have a good smile it needs to be nice and white.

For many people the simple task of brushing your teeth becomes a burden. You have to keep in mind that getting or keeping white teeth takes some work on your part and it starts with brushing your teeth. You also have to be conscious on how you bush them as well since using too hard of bristle brush or the wrong motion can cause harm.

It’s easy to spot neglected teeth, usually stained and sometimes even missing teeth due to tooth loss. Everyday brushing with a soft brush is so simple and keeps your teeth clean. If you keep up the brushing and see your dentist on a six month period you’ll be off to a good start.

With a proper mixture of baking soda, glycerin, salt, peppermint extract for flavor and you’ve got your own natural whitening toothpaste.

If you looking for a stronger remedy there are tooth whitening gels which work really well and give you that smile you’re dreamed about. A mouth tray which you acquire for the dentist is needed. Once you get one made from your dental office you’ll use that to put the tooth whitening gel into. Once the gel is applied to the tray that should rest in your mouth for 30 minutes or so.

Last is the OTC variety or whitening products, one of more popular ones being the white strips. The strips are used by placing one on the top teeth and one on the bottom teeth. One side of the strip contains the solution that does the whitening and it usually takes two times per day for thirty minutes for two weeks.

It can be overwhelming with the number of products out on the market today. Some you see results and love and other will be a waste of money. The main thing is to make sure you see your dentist for the routine checkups and also ask questions about tooth whitening to get the best information.

How To Stop Teeth Grinding

There are several different theories about what causes teeth grinding. Due to the many theories, there are just as many opinions on what will stop teeth grinding. The easiest way to stop teeth grinding is to be fitted for a mouthpiece. For most people who grind their teeth, a mouthpiece will be an effective solution.

Wearing a mouthpiece protects you from causing potential wear or fractures caused by grinding. The mouthpiece will protect your jaw from damage. Damaging your jaw can cause facial malformation and affect your hearing.

Reducing stress is one of the agreed treatments to help people stop teeth grinding. There are many steps a person can take in order to reduce stress from their lives. Everything from a daily walk or run, meditation to medication, can be used in stress reduction therapy.

Another way to stop teeth grinding is to lower the amount of stimulants you consume in the course of any given day. This includes the elimination of coffee, tea, or soda drinks containing caffeine. Over stimulation can be a cause of this affliction and anything you can do to reduce stimulation, especially before sleep, will help stop teeth grinding. Chocolate also contains caffeine and eating a lot of chocolate or having a chocolate snack before bedtime can increase stimulation of your body.

While many people do not want to hear this, it is recommended that people that suffer from teeth grinding should not drink alcohol. It has been shown that here is a connection between drinking alcohol and teeth grinding.

Do not chew nervously while you are awake. Chewing pens and pencils or anything that is not food can cause you to grind your teeth. Such chewing is generally a nervous problem and is often related to stress. Many people have the nervous habit of chewing pens or pencils during their workday and then wonder why they are having teeth grinding problems at night. It is quite possible to carry our conscious nervous habits like chewing into our subconscious, sleeping brain. Take notice if you are chewing on pens, pencils, or anything else nervously during the day. If you find you have this nervous habit, try and stop doing it. If you are successful in quitting your conscious nervous chewing, you will probably find that you can stop teeth grinding at night, as well.

Another stress related conscious habit you should seek to avoid is clenching your jaw. You might be doing this a lot and not even know it. If you want to stop teeth grinding at night, you might want to ask some of the people around you during the day to help you out by taking notice of whether you are clenching your jaw often. If it is enough of a nervous habit, some of them may have observed it already and will tell you so. This, again, is another demonstration of carrying a waking nervous habit into a sleeping disorder. Your jaw is determining to make your teeth grind at night because it does it during the day. Stop your daytime jaw clenching and you will probably stop teeth grinding at night.
