Fraudulent reverse mortgages increase awareness and demand for highly knowledgeable, trustworthy brokers like Scott Tucker, master of the mortgage payday; AG

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

Last month, the Massachusetts state Division of Banks ordered that five companies stop selling reverse mortgages to senior homeowners because the companies allegedly were not properly licensed to sell the mortgages in the state. In a financial plan already riddled with unfounded fear and uncertainty based on misconceptions, this recent scandal only serves to exacerbate the problems associated with reverse mortgages, which can actually be invaluable sources of income for elderly homeowners.

A reverse mortgage allows a lender to pay the homeowner certain amounts per month, collecting fees and interest, and the lender will be paid back when the homeowner sells the property or dies. For many seniors, it can mean that they own their houses for the rest of their lives rather than losing property and being forced into assisted living. Unfortunately, fraud could scare potential reverse mortgage users away from even considering the option if a broker presents it.

The key to continuing to provide the opportunity for seniors to consider the benefits of a reverse mortgage is education for all seniors, in the event that they are approached by a broker bearing the reverse mortgage offer. Brokers who have the best intentions will have a wealth of knowledge on the topic and will be able to answer any question that is brought up, even to the extent that they will admit the benefits of other financial planning options. Scott Tucker, a Chicago mortgage broker and loans officer, is one broker who recognized the potential in reverse mortgages back in 2009 and set to work building a thorough knowledge of the plans for himself. Now, as reverse mortgages are in the spotlight after recent economic legislation, Tucker is an authority on reverse mortgage plans. He hosts workshops to educate and inform people about reverse mortgages, whether they end up being his clients or not. The key is to get the word out there-especially to debunk common misconceptions-so that seniors can make educated decisions during financial planning.

Tucker also authored a book called “Reverse Mortgages: what you need to know from Z to A,” and he has made several radio appearances to discuss the topic. Success stories from his clients have mentioned that Tucker’s education and ultimate reverse mortgage brokerage made them feel “clear and confident” moving toward the future.

The fraudulent brokers in Massachusetts were using the basic tenants of a reverse mortgage to promise people that they would have enough money to take lavish vacations and guaranteeing 100 percent that the reverse mortgage wouldn’t result in foreclosure or eviction. A truly knowledgeable broker will acknowledge the potential pitfalls of reverse mortgages, including the fact they aren’t appropriate for everyone’s situation and that the additional income should be used not for personal vacation but for medical bills for care the person relies on.

Tucker says that many people believe they will lose their property at the end of their lives in a reverse mortgage situation, but that is untrue; they can maintain ownership and even leave the home to their children or grandchildren. He also says that many people believe they will die with outrageous debt if they choose a reverse mortgage. While a family who plans to move several more times in their lifetimes might find that a reverse mortgage creates too much debt, a senior with a fixed income who has high mortgage or medical expenses could benefit significantly from the arrangement.

The most important thing to keep in mind when considering a reverse mortgage is to keep an open mind. While fraudulent brokers will peddle the plans any way that makes a person sign the dotted line, brokers with knowledge the depth of Tucker’s will care most about helping a senior move comfortably and confidently toward the future.

Texas is the latest example of a state whose citizens are adopting reverse mortgages more and more. On Sept. 8, the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association and MRMLA held its 10th annual Reverse Mortgage Day, an event for mortgage lenders, secondary market experts and bank executives from across the country. The professionals discussed policies that will affect reverse mortgage lending in the future.

Texas became the second largest reverse mortgage lending state since it began offering the plans 11 years ago, and it shows great potential for increasing the volume over the next 5 years.

Because of the economic recession in the nation during the past few years, reverse mortgages are gaining attention and popularity as an option for senior homeowners who have low or fixed incomes with large mortgage or medical expenses. However, reverse mortgages have been around for a while, and although some institutions are just now beginning to realize their significance, some brokers realized it a long time ago.

Scott Tucker, a Chicago-based mortgage broker and loan officer, first noticed the potential in reverse mortgages more than two years ago. He had been promoting a mortgage marketing system he developed when reverse mortgages caught his eye, and he decided to become an expert. He has since made radio appearances to discuss, inform and educate people on reverse mortgages, he has held workshops for the same purposes, and he even wrote a book titled, “Reverse Mortgages: what you need to know from Z to A.”

Tucker has educated and converted scores of people on reverse mortgages, dealing with clients who say his services have allowed them to move forward in life with confidence and clarity. But of course, for the nation to fully realize the benefits of reverse mortgages when they are applied correctly, brokers in other states need to take after Tucker and promote, promote, promote. Not only do people need to be educated on the way reverse mortgages work, but they need to be assured that the risks associated with reverse mortgages are unlikely to happen to them.

When used correctly, a reverse mortgage can provide a senior with desperately needed income to help with medical bills or mortgage payments. However, when brokers carelessly try to sell reverse mortgages for families who have moderate income or who plan on moving several times in the future, the financial plans often result in foreclosure, eviction, and debt. Elderly people who fear these results with their own reverse mortgages need to be consoled and assured that a reverse mortgage is preferable in their situations. Tucker can also be of help in that regard; he built his real estate career on his relationships with clients, opting to develop his client base under the radar rather than targeting the general mainstream. He sent precisely targeted messaging to niche markets he knew were already likely to do business with him, and used his own unconventional approach and personality to secure the deals. In the same way, for reverse mortgages to work, there needs to exist a likely chance the plan will work for the client, and then, depending on the client’s income level, debt and lifestyle, the explanation of reverse mortgages should be tailored in order to respond to the particular individual’s needs.

With reverse mortgages expected to take on greater significance, the presentation, education and approach of selling the mortgages needs to be carefully developed. Experienced professionals like Tucker can help to promulgate successful methods for reverse mortgage.

The Five Golden Rules Of Brain Training

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Golden rules are quite special rules that one should always keep in mind and never forget. These are extremely important and useful guideposts to help you keep on track and headed in the proper direction. Golden Rules exist to get used, to be followed, and to guide you. No matter what your primary goal is or what challenge you face, the rule will be there. Just look for the Golden Rule that applies and follow it.

Listed here are my 5 best Golden Rules to effective brain training.

Golden Rule # 1, Targeting. An effective training task must be carefully targeted to train brain functions that will lead to the maximum benefit for the user in daily life. Some exercises will lead to improvements on the specific tasks trained. Highly effective brain training will be characterized not just by improvements on the tasks themselves, but also on transfer of that improvement to performance of real world tasks. Remember, no training task will improve all aspects of cognition. Targeting the specific aspects of brain functions will lead to the maximum benefit for the user in daily life.

Golden Rule # 2, Adaptivity. The response to challenge is a central component of how the nervous system operates, and shaping the response properties of the system progressively and adaptively is a part of all effective learning processes Remember the fact that an effective brain training exercise should adaptively challenge the user, without discouraging him.

Golden Rule # 3, Novelty. This is important because in order for the brain to be exercised effectively, it must be confronted with novel tasks and challenges. Many of the kinds of challenges that are typically recommended for brain health, such as crossword puzzles and bridge, are highly over-learned tasks that do not force the brain’s processing systems to operate in new ways. Working in new ways that are not over-learned is critical for driving nervous system remodeling.

Golden Rule # 4, Engagement. Engagement and reward are critical components of making brain games effective and encouraging people to do them. When the brain is in an engaged and rewarded state, it is much more open to learning and change. What’s more, the very process of being rewarded for correct responses in a given task teaches the brain mechanisms to process that information more effectively.

Golden Rule # 5, Completeness. The brain is a highly complex, interacting, and integrated system. Training on a limited aspect of brain function, such as visual attention, auditory processing, or working memory, in isolation is unlikely to yield optimal results for real world function. Engaging in the tasks of daily living requires the proper functioning of all aspect of cognition.

If you follow these golden rules to effective brain training, you’ll find your life easier, your progress speedier as well as your successes more pronounced and frequent.

The Truth About Benign Positional Vertigo Exercises

Monday, December 6th, 2010

When learned properly benign positional vertigo exercises are a powerful cure for vertigo. One of the most common medical issues that affect people is vertigo. It is frequently in the top 3 reasons for visiting a doctor. Incorrectly many people think of vertigo as a fear of heights. Also incorrectly it is mistaken for feeling lightheaded, like you are about to faint. Vertigo is more correctly described as feeling dizzy. Vertigo is an illusion of movement, when you feel yourself or your environment spinning around you, when they are in fact still.

There can be many causes of vertigo. The most common cause is called benign positional vertigo. Other causes include vestibular neuritis, Meniere’s disease and vestibular migraine. Vestibular neuritis is inflammation of a nerve that plays a role in communicating balance to the brain. Meniere’s disease is a problem with fluid in the inner ear, it has many other symptoms and is very characteristic in the presentation of vertigo. Vestibular migraine is vertigo that is related to a migraine. There are many different treatments for these different types of vertigo but for benign positional vertigo it is best treated by benign positional vertigo exercises.

The cause of benign positional vertigo is small loose particles in the fluid of the inner ear organs of balance. These loose particles then disrupt the balance receptors and result in incorrect signaling to the brain. This will cause the sensation of movement when there is actually no movement happening. Incorrectly and commonly treated with drugs, a much safer and more effective solution in the form of benign positional vertigo exercises exists for this type of vertigo.

The characteristics of benign positional vertigo are very distinct. When the vertigo happens it is brief and lasts under 10 seconds. It will be perceived as the room spinning around you. The feeling of nausea may or may not be present. This vertigo has very characteristic triggering movements. These include lying down or sitting up in bed, turning over in bed, bending forwards like you are tying your shoe and looking at the sky or ceiling. The symptoms are commonly masked by drugs but the only real solution to the problem is benign positional vertigo exercises. When performed correctly they are a safe and fast acting solution.

Drugs are commonly given for the symptoms of benign positional vertigo. They provide a false sense of relief by desensitizing the nervous system and the feeling of nausea and vertigo. They do nothing to fix the cause of the vertigo, they only treat the symptoms. The use of benign positional vertigo exercises is the only way to correct the root cause of this vertigo. When performed properly they are safe, effective and quick acting. Plus they can be performed in the comfort of your own home.

I urge people to take any information they get on the internet for free with a grain of salt. Unfortunately many of the recommendations for benign positional vertigo exercises on the internet are missing vital pieces of information and could actually end up doing you harm. So do your research and make sure you source your information from a trustworthy and reliable source. Your health is not worth the risk. Learning the proper performance of vertigo exercises will ensure a fast resolution to your symptoms.

3 Stroke Recovery Lies That Could Be Affecting Your Progress

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Just like all aspects of human existences we are always looking for better ways to do things. The realm of stroke recovery is one of these areas. Ever since recovery from stroke became a reality therapist, practitioners and caregivers have been looking for better methods of improving recovery. Or have they? While I do feel that some people who work with stroke recovery are seeking better answers, more efficient methods and new techniques. I feel a majority of the people who are in need of stroke rehabilitation do not receive any of the best or latest techniques in stroke exercises.

There can be a few reasons for this. Mainstream beliefs tend to get indoctrinated in the general public. A news report here, a magazine article there and before you know it, a certain belief is accepted as science and once this happens it can be very hard to change. We see this in other areas such as health and fitness. The three stroke recovery myths that this article will address are that the brain cannot change, only a small window of stroke recovery opportunity exists and lastly that there are not better ways to perform stroke rehabilitation. These are all myths that repeated and perpetuated with no science to back them up and are potentially affecting the recovery of many stroke survivors.

I cannot believe that myth number one still gets any credence. Some people still feel that the brain is set in stone and cannot change. We see the brain changing all the time and at every age. Every time we learn something new, the brain has changed. For example for you to learn a new skill such as like playing tennis requires your brain to change. As you improve, your co-ordination gets better, your speed improves and your accuracy sharpens all this must be reflected by changes in your brain and nervous system. The brain controls everything, and when changes happen like the previously mentioned tennis ones, the brain must have changed. This myth has been dispelled by science and neurology and as a far as I am concerned is really, pardon the pun, a no brainer to argue against.

Another commonly held myth about stroke recovery is that recovery can only happen in a small time period after the stroke and once that window is closed any further recovery is impossible. As a carry on from the point above, that the brain can change at anytime, this is once again just a myth. I don’t discredit that making progress could be easier if stroke rehabilitation is started earlier but to say that it cannot be made after a magical window has closed is absurd. I have heard of some individuals 10 years after their stroke, who have been at a certain level of recovery and were then exposed to advanced stroke recovery methods and made more progress at that stage of their recovery than previously. The brain is capable of change at any time and if you are a stroke survivor and wanting more progress do not ever give up.

Lastly the belief that there are not better and more efficient ways to do stroke recovery is continually perpetuated. Most stroke patients are not up to date on how the brain works, how stroke recovery works and the best techniques for stroke rehabilitation. In fact most practitioners are not probably up to date on this information. And it is a real pity, because in the last decade there have been tremendous advances in brain research and subsequently in stroke recovery but it will take a while until these techniques and methods reach the masses. So unless you happen to be one of the lucky ones, you are probably being short changed in your stroke recovery efforts.

This article serves as a basis to expand your beliefs about stroke recovery. The area of stroke rehabilitation can be a difficult area to navigate if you do not have a background in science. One of my main goals is to help those who are in need of help by letting them have access to all the latest and best stroke rehabilitation exercises available. This will hopefully benefit stroke survivors, their family members and health care providers.

Cure Your Dizziness When Lying Down

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

A common issue that lands people in the medical office is that of dizziness. Not to be confused with feeling lightheaded, dizziness feels like you are on a fun park merry go round. People can experience dizziness when lying down and it will feel like the whole room is turning around them. Medically dizziness is called vertigo. For those with dizziness when lying down there is a simple, easy and effective solution.

One of the most common causes of dizziness when lying down is called BPPV (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo). The triggering factor of this type of vertigo is certain head positions or movements. Lying down is a common trigger. Usually vertigo can also be experienced with rolling over in bed, bending forwards and looking upwards. This type of vertigo is caused by a benign process, which means the underlying cause is not life threatening. Many different causes of vertigo exist and some have life threatening causes. However, the possibility of injuring yourself during a BPPV episode is a real one. So it can be life threatening in that regard, but for many it is also scary, annoying and disrupting to everyday life.

Because it is not a life threatening condition, dizziness when lying down caused by BPPV is often brushed off in the medical community. It is usually advised to just ‘get over it’ with the patient being sent on their way or medication is prescribed. Medication in this case works by de-sensitizing your nervous system so you feel less dizzy and less nauseous. But this drug approach is just addressing the symptoms and by doing so gives you a false sense of security, because usually the problem is still there you just aren’t as aware of it. If you stopped taking your medication you would be back at square one.

The good news is that for those who have dizziness when lying down because of benign positional vertigo there is an effective drug free treatment. Medical science knows what causes this type of vertigo. In the inner ear are our balance organs. These are fluid filled canals with tiny balance receptor. With movement of the head the receptors are activated and they communicate this movement to the brain so we have an awareness of our movement. With BPPV there are some loose tiny particles in the fluid that disrupt the balance receptors and make them send incorrect signals to the brain. This happens with certain head position which is why dizziness when lying down is experienced.

For over 30 years there is a safe technique you can do to stop your dizziness when lying down. This method was invented by a medical doctor and is backed by research. Unfortunately many doctors are unaware of it or just choose not to perform it. It may be easier to send someone on their way or write them a script for drugs then to actually have to spend time with them and really help them. It does not take long to do and most people report feeling much better in one day. So give it a go, besides your dizziness, what have you got to lose?

Stop Psoriatic Arthritis Symptoms

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Psoriatic arthritis is a certain type of arthritis that happens in some individuals who have the chronic skin condition called psoriasis. It is somewhat similar to rheumatoid arthritis in its effects, although most people affected have a mild form of it. Psoriatic arthritis symptoms include both the skin problem and joint issues, and can result in psoriatic arthritis symptoms as well. While there is said to be no definitive cure for psoriatic arthritis or psoriasis, there are many treatment options available to help lessen the symptoms. It is classified as a chronic disease and if left untreated can result in more serious health issues.

Commonly psoriatic arthritis symptoms are confined to the end joints of the toes or fingers. It is noted that in about one fifth of cases there will be issues with the spine. Very severe joint destruction can occur with a rare type of psoriatic arthritis called ‘psoriatic arthritis mutilans’ which is focused on joints.

Psoriasis on the skin appears as a scaly, rough type of rash that is most predominant on the knees, elbows and scalp. The rash has scaly patches of skin that are red or silvery gray in color. Out of the thirty million Americans with psoriasis about five to ten percent with have psoriatic arthritis symptoms.

For men and women the condition affects both equally and usually happens in the 30-50 years old age bracket. For a small number of sufferers the joint problems of the arthritis occur before the problems of the skin condition. In general the course of psoriatic arthritis is mild and will be limited to only a small number of joints.

Currently no medication can cure psoriatic arthritis. The general treatment should be tailored to an individual and take into account personal variances in flare-ups, aggravating factors and remission periods. This will ensure the best possible outcome. Each individual is different in how the disease manifests and progresses and thus should be treated slightly differently

Treatment focuses on reducing the psoriatic arthritis symptoms of inflamed joints, pain and further degeneration. An approach of almost treating two separate disorders, the arthritis and psoriasis, is often the best way to approach it. Topical and oral medications are used for the skin such as antibiotics. It is important to prevent secondary skin infection in people with psoriasis due to skin irritation. There is some discussion of UV light therapy, obtained naturally from the sun or artificially as being beneficial for the rash. It is certainly an avenue worth exploring.

The arthritis of the psoriatic arthritis symptoms is taken care of like many other types of arthritis with the use of aspirin, medication and anti-arthritis drugs. For pain and joint swelling it is commonly non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs that are used. There are many non-drug options for decreasing inflammation. The use of high dose fish oils has been very effective for some people. Recently a part of the Indian spice turmeric called curcumin has come into fashion as an effective anti-inflammatory substance. And herbalists have long used devil or cats claw to ease inflammation.

Is an H1N1 Vaccine Necessary?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

With flu season coming up, the number of flu incidents is already well ahead of its usual pace. I saw a report on TV a few nights ago that said there have been more illnesses from flu this year than there usually are in a whole season.

There’s one thing that scares people most about H1N1, and it has to do with the danger it presents to younger people it hits.

Typically, a strong immune system will fight off bugs. This, on the other hand, seems to strike ordinarily healthy people the hardest.

Having said that, officials are recommending the use of an H1N1 and regular flu vaccine each year to minimize the chances of the worst possible impact nationwide that health officials fear. They say this is the best protection against potential infection.

Many people wonder why they should even bother getting a flu vaccine. After all, only a fraction of a single percentage point of the people who get it end up dying as a result, so no one thinks they’ll be one of those unfortunate figures.

You might have heard the recent story of a Washington Redskins cheerleader, who was left unable to speak after having a bad reaction to the flu vaccine this season. This is certainly a scary thought, though this reaction obviously isn’t the norm.

At the end of the day, your decision to vaccinate yourself from H1N1 should really rest on the advice of your medical professional. As someone who has no affiliation with the medical profession, I really can’t advise you on something like this – but, I will advise you to speak to your doctor to ask for the best recommended course of action.

As this swine flu continues to make its rounds, we must learn more about this subtle but lethal illness. Discussing our options will help to keep things in the spotlight.

Mortality Rate Depicts the Need for Michigan Life Insurance

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Forensic Files, 20/20 and American Greed Crime reality television shows cast a negative stigma on life policies. However, in the state of Michigan has a regular mortality rate, demonstrating the need to obtain a Michigan life insurance plan.

Given the staggering numbers of homicide plots, related to buying a life insurance policy, families and individuals, who need a policy, are more prone to neglect having a life contingency plan in place. Consequently, forging a Michigan life insurance plan may financially burden surviving loved ones.

On the Michigan statewide Web site, a log of statistics, documenting the mortality rate, illustrates life’s uncertainties, demonstrating a necessity for an economical Michigan life insurance plan. Strokes, cancer, heart disease, cancer, and unintentional related deaths top the list of the leading causes of death in Michigan.

Despite the fact that these fatality statistics are dated from 2007, over the last decade, heart disease accounts for an annual mortality rate of 24,000 people’s lives. In Michigan, each year, cancer assumes another approximated 20,000 deaths. Strokes average 5,000 deaths, with, septicemia blood poisonings accounting for 900 lives.

Unintentional injury-related deaths average 3400+ each year. These include everything from freak accidents to drowning. The state of Michigan reports an average of 650 homicides each year. Amid the high number of mortality situations, a Michigan life insurance policy offsets some of the financial responsibilities, associated with an unforeseen death.

It happens more often than not-a family member dies unexpectedly, leaving the burden of bills and other after life details for the family to work out. Meanwhile, a Michigan term life insurance policy eradicates all the bureaucratic red tape.

For most poor to middle class families, a Michigan life insurance plan may serve as a mediator, per se. From managing those final financial responsibilities (funeral burial costs, assets, property, probate, medical bills), to leaving heirs an inheritance), many financial planners advise clients to carry a Michigan life insurance policy to save heirs the duress of administering the estate.

Unlike the cases seen on real-life crime shows, a Michigan life insurance policy can ease the stress of mourning a loss riddled with looming legality issues. Not too mention, some Michigan life insurance plans have built in savings to garner a potential return on the policy.

Forgoing Illinois Medical Insurance Increases Risk of Death

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Not having Illinois medical insurance can be a life and death situation. While the health insurance reform bill dangles, more data supports the potential for a higher death toll among the uninsured. From developing cancer, heart disease to suffering from a traumatic injury, evidence portends that being without Illinois medical insurance is merely a fatal proposition.

In a recently published clinical trial, 1231 patients, suffering from head or neck cancers, were followed from 1998 through 2007 at the Pittsburgh Medical Center. Researchers compared the survival rate of patients, who had health insurance with the uninsured. Out of 128 subjects, who did not have health insurance or were on Medicaid, 50 percent passed away. In contrast, only 22 percent of the patients with insurance perished.

Similar mortality discrepancies were noted among individuals suffering from traumatic injuries. Physicians and researchers at Children’s Hospital Boston and Harvard Medical School collected statistics from the National Trauma Data Bank, which has a compilation of 2.7 million patients admitted to trauma centers throughout the United States. Evaluating data from 2002 and 2006, researchers looked at 687,091 adult patients admissions. The data showed a significant correlation in the death rate of the uninsured patient versus the insured. Researchers tried to modify the data to reduce the impact of race, age and gender; however, the statistics maintained a higher mortality rate among the uninsured. Even more curious, individuals on Medicare showed a comparable survival odds to patients covered by a private health insurance policy.

Researchers compared the mortality rate of 29,829 patients admitted at the Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma and Critical Care, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from 1998 to 2005. Uninsured patients accounted for 68 percent of the patients. Again, the data among the non-insured younger, less severely injured had a higher death rate than the insured counterparts.

Although hospitals provide treatment, it is undetermined whether the difference in medical care occurs during hospitalization. Even without any specific clinical trials comparing the death toll of the uninsured to individuals with Illinois medical insurance, the Centers for Disease Control has data suggesting that the rate of Illinoisans not having Illinois medical insurance has been spiking for the last decade.

Meanwhile, cardiovascular disease continues be the first cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association noticed a 33 percent spike in cardiovascular inpatient operations from 1996 to 2006. With close to 15 percent of the Illinois population not having Illinois medical insurance coupled with a high mortality rate of the uninsured, and the emerging number of cardiovascular disease diagnoses, a lack of health coverage forecasts a detrimental outcome.

Illinois medical insurance consultant, Michael Novelli “Despite the fact that cancer and cardiovascular diseases are not completely preventable, individuals with medical coverage are more apt to have early detection, assuring better medical care. An abundance of managed care Illinois medical insurance plans are economical enough to impede additional medical casualties.
