How To Ease Arthritic Pain Through Chiropractic Care

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Not too long ago, arthritis was deemed to be just another facet of the aging process – something everyone would have to suffer through eventually. Once arthritis is detected, patients were advised to slow down, rest and take drugs to alleviate the symptoms. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. Recent studies show new evidence to question the treatment of arthritis.

Arthritis is defined as an inflammation of the joints. There are many diseases that are classified under the term arthritis. There are many different types of arthritis. The most common type that affects most people in their life time is osteoarthritis. Arthritis typically starts either in one’s middle age or, more frequently, in one’s later years, some patients experience symptoms much earlier.

Those afflicted with arthritis experience joint swelling, pain, stiffness, and loss of function. The following symptoms categorize arthritis. Most often the wrist and finger joints that are closest to the hand are affected as well as the shoulder, hip, knee, elbow, ankle, neck, and feet. Symptoms can progressively spread to other parts of the body, not just the joints, and can last for years.

Your chiropractic doctor can help your body move with more ease and comfort. Chiropractic care focuses on physical manipulation and alignment, so that joints can benefit from adjustments aimed at reducing pain and increasing range of motion. Along with manipulation, continued stretching and exercises will help stimulate overall joint flexibility. Such exercises include: biking, walking, swimming, and mild weight lifting.

In order to alleviate arthritic symptoms, patients should get regular chiropractic manipulation and regular exercise. Chiropractic manipulations promote movement and flexibility while exercise promotes strong muscles and endurance. Make sure you consult with a well trained chiropractic doctor so he/she can tailor the right exercise program for your needs. Adhesive Capsulitis – How To Get Rid Of It

Monday, September 5th, 2011

If you have ever suffered with shoulder pain you will know that the intense pain can be a nightmare to deal with. Frozen shoulder occurs in about 2-5% of the population and occurs in women more often than men. Frozen Shoulder (FS) or (Adhesive Capsulitis) is marked by significant loss of range of motion in the shoulder and can be accompanied by pain and discomfort. The causes of frozen shoulder are not fully understood.

Frozen Shoulder can have 4 stages. STAGE 1: No loss of range of motion (ROM) or very limited loss of ROM. Early signs of joint changes seen on arthroscopy. Possible gradual onset of pain. STAGE 2: Early signs of adhesions and certain shoulder ROM’s begin to become painful. Pain can even radiate promoting stiffness in the shoulder. STAGE 3: Reduction in size of synovial (joint) cavity and glenohumeral space (“shoulder socket”). Pain with motion but often no pain with rest. Patients can also experience muscle atrophy (muscle wasting) around the shoulder. STAGE 4: Extreme loss in ROM, significant decrease in glenohumeral space. Then often condition improves gradually. Patient may or may not regain all shoulder ROM.

The entire natural history of a Frozen Shoulder can last anywhere between 4 months to 2 years.
There are some disagreements on how a person can develop Frozen Shoulder, but the common causes may include; prolonged immobilization of arm, Coronary Artery Disease, Chest Surgery, Mastectomy, Arthritis, Trauma and Chronis Tendinitis of the shoulder. Frozen shoulder tends to be more common in women, usually between the ages of 40-60 yrs. Also, Frozen Shoulder tends to be more common in the non-dominant arm.

How do you treat a Frozen Shoulder? During the acute phase the focus should be on managing the pain and inflammation in the shoulder. It is important for the patient to maintain as much ROM in the shoulder as possible. Stretching of the joint or chiropractic adjustments can be helpful to improve ROM in the joint. Other forms of therapy that can also help include; heat, physiotherapy, physical therapy, and massage. Aggressive home care will also be important.

Due to the effects of Frozen Shoulder, many people find themselves incapable of doing basic home chores or daily self care such as combing their hair. As the patient becomes more debilitated, he/she becomes more depressed. Early treatments ensure that the successful treatment of frozen shoulder can help people get back their normal life.

Alternative Treatment For Neuropathy And Sciatica

Monday, June 20th, 2011

Do you have neuropathy, sharp pain, or numbness? Stenosis, sciatica, herniated discs, even degenerated discs or arthritis could be to blame. There are many possible causes but the symptoms are usually one of coldness, a tingling “pins and needles” sort of sensation, complete numbness or even itching. Understanding this type of pain is the first step to getting relief.

A common cause of neuropathy or sciatica is from compressed discs pressing or irritating the nerve roots. This can happen in any of the vertebral joints from the neck all the way down to the tailbone. Peripheral neuropathy can be caused by nerve entrapment usually caused by some accident or trauma. Sciatica is a symptom of pain, numbness, weakness or tingling. Radicular pain can start in the neck and run down your arms or start in your back or buttocks, and go all the way down the sides of the leg in to the sides of the foot.

Many cases of neuropathy and sciatica can be helped by chiropractic care. There is another option other than surgery. This non-surgical procedure and specialized treatment technology have proven effective in helping to reduce the pressure on the spinal discs and delicate nerve root that causes pain. Spinal Decompression Therapy In San Diego Helping Many With Disc Bulges

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Chronic back pain frequently results from a variety of common health disorders. These include herniated or bulging discs, sciatica, posterior facet disease, and long term degenerative disc disorders. Many of these problems share one common source. The common source is compressed vertebral discs. These discs supply a much-needed protection between the spinal vertebrae. As they get weakened and swollen, the condition can easily develop into chronic pain that does not go away.

The primary and most common method of treatment is to just use medications to help with the pain. The drawback with these prescriptions is the fact that the pain relief they supply is only short-lived. Eventually, patients develop a tolerance to these types of pills and therefore have to use larger and larger doses of ever more potent pain medications. These kinds of remedies do not actually heal the actual underlying problem. They only cover up the symptoms.

Others try spinal disc surgery. Unfortunately, the actual advantages of these surgeries has been the topic of heated debate. Some people simply recover better than others, and others never recover from this kind of operation. Some even get worse from the surgery. There can be no guarantee that this surgical procedure will be effective. There is also quite a bit of risk involved in going through it. For some patients, the pain will get more intense just from the surgery.

Many people who have low back and neck pain come to think that they will live with the pain forever. They give up on doctors and surgeons, and basically try to just cope with it. Doing so is really a large trigger for emotional problems. Some people experience anxiety and depression.

Recent years have seen the development of a new health-related technology capable of healing many cases of spinal compression disorder in many patients with back pain. It is referred to as non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. This is accomplished via the use of unique spinal decompression machines, which includes different decompression machines such as the DRX9000, ABS, Triton and more. Treatment with spinal decompression equipment can usually bring rapid relief of chronic back and neck pain without all the risks associated with surgery and medication.

Many people with back pain experience a much faster recovery from their pain from spinal decompression technology. It can be very helpful and the chiropractors at New Century Spine Centers in San Diego have been helping many. A normal course of non-invasive spinal decompression therapy will last a few months. This is an extremely encouraging medical technology used by some orthopedists and chiropractors. Spinal decompression treatment offers a major improvement in the treatment of chronic back pain.

Inability To Handle Stress Most Likely Leads To Early Death Unless…

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

If someone you love or you are a “worry-wart”, reading the rest of this article may prevent several deadly diseases and add years to your life. Allow me to explain. Why some people are healthy and others get sick has been a researched and heavily debated topic for a long, long time. Some give almost all the credit to genes. Basically you are pre-programmed at birth. Mother nature has dealt you a certain “hand” and that’s it. You will either be healthy, or sick, and there is nothing much you can do about it.

Let’s consider for example, the “cancer gene.” If cancer is “in your genes,” you’re doomed. If not, you’re lucky. Supporters of this philosophy commonly use this example as proof: One person is young, eats all the right food and exercises and still gets cancer or has a massive heart attack. Yet, someone else eats junk, smokes, drinks and never exercised a day in their life and lives to be 95.

Funny thing is you often hear these people say, “You can walk out of your house and get hit by a bus tomorrow,” as an excuse to completely neglect their health and future. Others don’t give genes much credit. They say it’s ALL (or at least MOST) how you live your life and take care of yourself. And then there are those somewhere in between. To them, both genes and how you live your life are important factors.

Their argument is that the youthful man or girl that took care of himself or herself and still got sick would have gotten sick sooner. And, the 99 year-old may have lived even longer if he or she took care of himself or herself. Obviously, all this is something to think about. Genes obviously have something to do with our potential. But by how much is it? And is it as limiting as many once thought? The simple fact that our average life span is much different today than it was a century ago should tell you something. There are factors that affect our lifespan and help determine if we live those years healthy and happy or sick and miserable. Which you decide is important.

According to an April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily, there is a broad consensus that there are five basic personality traits in most individuals. These five personality traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience. There are also sub-categories – but these five are what makes us up overall. But here’s what’s really important in all of this. Two of these traits are emotional stability and conscientiousness. These appear to be directly linked to your health and how long you may live. How is this? In psychology, the lack of emotional stability is called neuroticism. In other words, it’s a person’s tendency towards hand wringing and negative thinking. It is believed by many that high levels of neuroticism are inherited and such people do not handle pressure very well. They are often moody, anxious and uncomfortable in their daily activity. Studies have also shown a correlation to increased mortality rates in these individuals.

So, if “neuroticism” is inherited and leads to health problems and increased mortality, are some people simply pre-programmed to be unhealthy and die young? That’s where a Purdue University psychologist comes into the picture. According to the April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily: “Mroczek decided to explore this idea. Using a standard measure of neuroticism, he tracked more than 1,600 men over 12 years, recording not only how neurotic they were at the start, but also whether they got more or less neurotic over time. He also looked at mortality risk for these same men over an 18-year span. As reported in the May issue of Psychological Science, those who increased over time in neuroticism was a ticket to an early grave. In other words, these men–all middle age or older to begin with–did not grow old gracefully. They likely got more and more stressed, worried or fretful, and this downward spiral increased their risk for dying, mostly from cancer and heart disease. The good news is that men with a fretful temperament, if they managed for whatever reason to calm down a bit over time, had survival rates similar to those of emotionally stable men.”

So what’s the big lesson here in regards to your health and your longevity? First, it seems pretty clear your outlook does a whole heck of a lot more than just affect your success in business! Several studies show the way you think can have a weighty impact on how fit or under par you are. Namely diseases like cancer and heart disease. How? We don’t think anybody knows 100% for sure. It makes sense that pressure and the way you handle it produces chemicals like cortisol that suppress the immune system. This will have countless detrimental effects like aging.

But the real point here is what’s the difference? Who really cares exactly how all this works on the cellular level? The bottom line is: it happens. Negative thinking, a lot of it, over a comprehensive period of time will almost certainly age you, make you ill and take years off your life. And, an even more important point: altering the way you think and handle stress can stop the process.

How do you learn to deal with stress if you are a natural born “worry-wart?” The first thing is to realize NOTHING is ever as good or bad as it seems. And always change the things you can and forget about the things you can’t. Besides that, routine exercise programs and meditation have both been shown to reduce stress. Maybe if we start enjoying this wonderful life a little – it will get even better and we will get more of it! You can change the way you handle stress and reduce the negative effects. Or, at least that’s what the above-mentioned study shows. And it only makes sense. Have you ever taken a walk in the dark and had some loud noise scare you? What happened? Your eyes widened. Your heartbeat drastically increased. Your brain signaled your body to produce adrenalin and other “flight or fight” chemicals were dumped into your bloodstream. At that very moment, you were wide awake, stronger than usual and could run like an Olympic track star! But what happens shortly afterward? You crash… right? You come back down and feel exhausted. This, my friends, is a natural high and hangover. When you are constantly stressed and worry and don’t deal with it well… you will continually go through a similar reaction. Your body and mind basically go through the ringer. It just makes sense that if you learn how to deal with the stress more effectively – you will be healthier and lives longer. Living For Over 99 Years May Be Out Of Your Control

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

How would you like to live past the age of 100? I guess that’s kind of a loaded question because you’d think the answer is simple. Like the show, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” Of course you want to be a millionaire! Who doesn’t want to be a millionaire? Well, not Bill Gates of course. Becoming a millionaire would make him poor; at least, relatively poor in comparison. Everything is relative is this issue. For example, living to 100 years of age doesn’t interest me if I’m sick or in pain. On the other hand, I’d love to join the 100 year old club as long as the quality of my life and health was great. You see, it’s all very relative when it comes to age.

That’s being said, here are the findings of a study that identified something that doubles your chance of reaching and living past the age of 99. Here are the results according to an article in Earth times. In this article, “The researchers, Dr. Leonid Gavrilov and Dr. Natalia Gavrilova, say the age at which a mother gives birth is a major factor in the number of years the offspring lives. The chances of the child living up the age of 99 and beyond are almost double for a child born to a woman below 25 years of age.” The husband and wife team had previously discovered birth order is a major factor in longevity. These numbers were astonishing.

For example, first-born children, especially girls, are more likely to live past 99 years of age. The recent study shows the age of the mother is more important than any of the other factors. Gavrilov and Gavrilova used data from the U.S. Census, the Social Security Administration and genealogical records to identify 198 people over the age of one hundred born in the U.S. from 1890 to 1893 and then traced their family histories to establish possible predictors of their longevity. They found being born to a young mother had an important role in reaching the age of 99. There are other factors also like growing up in the Western part of the United States., spending part of one’s childhood on a farm and being born the first of the children. They feel the study needs further elaboration and deeper research to get better results. Gavrilov suspects the younger women’s eggs are different in their quality, and the best ones, the most vigorous, go first to fertilization. The researchers are of the opinion that their findings may have important social implications because many women tend to postpone childbearing to later ages due to career demands.

There appears to be both good news and some bad news. For example, if your mother was under the age of 25 when you were born, you’re probably doing back flips right now. On the other hand, if your mother was a little older when you were born, you may be a little depressed by what you just read. Well, the real truth of the matter is: you shouldn’t be too elated or discouraged by what Dr. Garilov and Dr. Garilova uncovered.

The first thing to understand from this chiropractic article is that correlation is not causation. This “study” was comprised of data from 198 people who were born from 1890 to 1893. 198 is not a lot of people and may not be representative of the overall population. In other words, just because a certain percentage of the study group who lived to be over 100 years old were born to a mother under the age of 25 does not necessarily mean that was the cause of anything. There are a lot of unknown factors. For example, let’s say we were trying to find out what causes certain people to have high IQs. We looked at some data of 198 people with IQs of 150 and above. And in that data, we found that a high percentage of these people’s parents had blue eyes. Would your conclusion be that blue eyes are a cause of high IQ? Of course it would not. It is simply a correlation that has nothing to do with causation, especially if your data came from a part of the world where a large portion of the population has blue eyes! It could have been just a coincidence.

The second important thing about the study is that 1890 – 1893 was a long, long, long time ago. In terms of health and what we know about health, it is an eternity! This is why I’m not too sure you should be concerned about living to be 100 if your mother was over 25 when she gave birth to you. There are other factors that affect your lifespan that you can control such as weight, activity level (exercise) and stress.
