It is often said that the oily skin type ages better and slower than the other skin types. Apparently it takes longer for wrinkles, age spots and fine lines to develop on people with oily skin. Even though this is true, people with oily skin still have to deal with issues as they age. Women with oily skin who are experiencing menopause could even start to get spots again!
Oily skin is better at aging than the other skin types because it has a better moisture barrier than the other skin types. It also produces more oil than the other skin types (hence the name). The moisture barrier slows aging by defending the skin from elastin and collagen breakdowns. It’s these breakdowns that lead to the fine lines and wrinkles.
When women reach menopause the signs of aging in the skin really start to show. This is because of an intense drying effect on the skin. This drying effect is not as harsh on people with the oily skin type and this is due to them having a better, stronger moisture barrier. The dryness is what makes the lines and wrinkles appear more clearly. The oily skin type tends to have other issues during this period such as breakouts of zits and inconsistency of moisture in different parts of the face. This means that although the dryness is not as intense, special care is still needed during this period.
The inconsistency of moisture around the face during aging make it hard to moisturize the face effectively. You need to feel out the dryer areas and make sure to moisturize them more often than the rest of the face. The dry areas tend to be the mouth, eye and throat area and these are the areas that tend to show the wrinkles and fine lines. It is vital to be sure to remember to effectively protect your skin from the sun during aging using an oil free sunblock.
It is quite hard to find a good anti aging cream that works well with oily skin as most of the common ones tend to cause breakouts. If you not extremely sensitive to breakouts then it may be worth trying out a standard anti aging cream as this would make your life a lot easier. If you do feel like they are not working for you then you should continue to use oil free moisturizers.
