A Guide On The Different Methods Of Laser Eye Surgery

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Laser eye surgery is currently the most popular elective surgery and the numbers of people having it done continue to rise. The reason more and more people are having it done is because the price is reducing yet it is becoming increasingly accurate. As well as this, the risks are also reducing, meaning there has never been a better time to rid yourself of your glasses or contact lenses!

Lasik and lasek are the 2 main types of laser eye surgery accounting for about 99% of all laser eye surgery treatments. The reason they are so popular is due to the amazing visual results they produce. Approximately 90% of people having one of these procedures end up having driving vision or better following surgery.

The reason lasik is 7 times more popular than lasek is due to the fact that there is practically no discomfort at all during the recovery period. Lasek can typically result in at least 2-3 days of moderate pain. In addition to this, most people can return to work the day after lasik surgery whereas many people need as much as 1 week off work following lasek eye surgery.

If you want the very best chance of achieving 20/20 vision following surgery, then you need to combine your lasik or lasek with wavefront technology. Wavefront lasik and wavefront lasek improve not only the quantity of your vision but also the quality of your vision. This means that some people end up with even better vision without glasses after surgery then they ever had with glasses before surgery!

If you want the safest possible type of lasik then you should consider having intralase lasik. Intralase lasik is different to standard lasik, as it uses a laser to create the flap as opposed to a surgical blade (microkeratome). This generally means that there are less flap related complications and the visual results are even better.

Factors To Consider When Purchasing Contacts Online

Friday, March 5th, 2010

If you often find yourself forgetting to call in your contact lens prescriptions or it is just becoming an issue to find the time to order them from the office, perhaps you should consider some other options. A great option to consider is to purchase your contacts online. By doing this you can save some money in the meantime and also keep track of your contact prescriptions. Here’s a general overview of what you can expect.

There are a lot of options for buying contacts online, generally. One of the main concerns, however, is to shop with a site that you know is reliable and trustworthy. You should find a site that you know is legitimate and will be able to send your order in a reasonable amount of time. There are a lot of sites on the internet that are dedicated providers. Do some searching and see what options you can find.

Some optometrists have websites that they choose to specifically work with for orders online. Because of this, you can sometimes get discounts on your contact lenses for a more reasonable price than what you might pay if you purchased them directly from the doctor themselves. This is also a good way to find a site to shop with if you are unsure of yourself. Check with your optometrist to see if they have any recommendations about what sites you should use for purchasing your lenses online.

There are always going to be some websites that will give you a discount in comparison to what price you are used to. You need to know to take the time to make the comparisons between sites and prices you are used to at your optometry office in order to ensure you get the best deal. You should also be aware that even sites with great prices might not have the prescription you need in stock.

One of the main concerns is to purchase from a site that actually checks on prescriptions individually. For the most part, it is illegal to purchase or sell prescription lenses to individuals that do not have the prescription for them. Generally, you know the site you are shopping at is secure if they ask for this information. Generally the company will ask for a copy of the information from either you or your doctor.

You should realize that some of the fees that you will pay for shipping will affect the price range. While you do have the convenience of receiving faster shipping in some circumstances, this can affect your price you pay for your lenses. Lenses that were at a discounted or low price can easily return to the usual price once you factor in shipping charges.

In addition to this, you should also realize that your price can be affected by insurance. Generally there are sites that will give you a reasonable price with the use of your insurance. However, there are sites that will also give you a reasonable price without your insurance as well. You can also sometimes receive a lower price for the amount of lenses you buy, such as in packs by several months or for the year. You should make comparisons and considerations on this for the best purchase possible.

Considering some of the above information can help you make a wise decision when purchasing contacts online. The choice can be particularly useful for keeping in stock on your prescription throughout the year. For some people, it can make keeping up with lens prescriptions more convenient.

Eye Exercises – Are They Really Effective?

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Since the inception of the idea of eye exercises, the effectiveness of correcting eye problems has been long debated. Despite the fact that many skeptics think eye exercises do not work, most people take an objective approach to whether or not they work, as evidence has shown that they do work to improve vision.

Much of the reason for skepticism in the effectiveness of eye exercises comes from the fact that many very credible sources are still separated by their opinions on the matter. Eye exercises have been proven very effective in some instances and studies, especially in those regarding eye problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

The general consensus among eye care physicians is the eye exercises can indeed work for those who have problems in aligning their eyes, and using their eyes as a team (i.e. people with lazy eye).

Patients who suffer from eye problems other than lazy eye, such as those with myopia, hypermetropia, and astigmatism, have also proven that eye exercises can be very effective in making them see more clearly. Scientists believe that this is logical, too, since the eye is a group of muscles, and just like any other muscle in the body, requires exercise to function properly.

Though there have been many positive results in scientific studies, there have also been negative ones as well. No real injuries or anything like that; just that the eye exercises didn’t work for some people. But just because they didn’t work for some people doesn’t mean they’re not going to work for everyone.

The most attacked visual training technique is the non-strabismic. Credible scientific authorities have asserted that the effectiveness of such visual training techniques cannot be proven in the treatment of refractive errors of the eyes or disorders emanating from infection of the eyes. Credible authorities have also issued counter statements to the contrary.

We must conclude that we must be objective in deciding whether eye exercises actually work, because of the varying opinions of the professionals.

Through using eye exercises, one can almost guarantee that they will improve their vision. After all, the eye has functioning muscles in it and require adequate exercise to be able to function properly.

Eye Exercises To Eliminate The Need For Glasses & Contacts

Friday, February 26th, 2010

Most computer users experience eye strain. This may be as a result of using inappropriate monitors like the CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) screens. Prolonged computer use may also bring about the same problem. If you experience a combination of regular headaches and eye strain, the problem might be associated with computer use. Sometimes computer use may interfere with your vision to the extent that you don’t see objects clearly, experience double vision in some instances, see colors differently or have irritated or dry eyes. Relief from many computer-use related eye disorders may be achieved through regular eye exercises.

Eye exercises are recommended for eye strain sufferers. While sitting at the computer, it is recommended to do the eye exercises every hour, since research has shown that staring at a computer screen for excessive periods of time is unhealthy for one’s eyes.

One of the eye exercises that is very popular in limiting eye strain is called palming. This can be performed throughout the day at work and even after work as well. To palm, lie down or sit relaxed in a comfortable position. Generate some heat in your hands by rubbing them together for about ten seconds. Now close your eyes and put your cupped hands over them. Don’t let your hands touch your eyelids; just keep out any light. For the next 1 to 10 minutes, remain relaxed and breathing in this position. Darkness will be all that you see.

Looking at a computer screen or anything else up close for too long can hinder your eye’s ability to refocus itself on something far away when you want it to. To keep your eyes fresh and relaxed, take a few short 10-30 second breaks every 10-20 minutes and scan your eyes around objects in the room that are about 10 feet away and further. This will keep the focusing muscles of your eyes fresh.

If you are still using one of those big old Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) computer monitors, be sure to put an anti-glare screen on it to minimize glare, which will in turn minimize eye strain. Another alternative is to just get an LCD screen, which is commonly used today anyway.

After working on your computer for some time always remember to take a break in order to give your eye muscles an opportunity to loosen up and rejuvenate. Make it a point to do eye exercises on routine basis. Your eyes will come out stronger and well focused and oriented to do their work. Such exercises may also help prevent or fix eye disorders from causes other than the computer.

Natural Vision Correction – Throw Away Your Glasses!

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The phrase natural vision correction is a broad term in the sense that it covers multiple different means of correcting disorders in the eye. Dating back to the 1800’s, natural vision correction techniques were practiced mostly by those suffering from misaligned eye disorders. It is important to note that this was before any eye sort of surgery really existed.

Back in the late 1800’s, eye specialists were known as “orhoptists”, and their practice for correcting misaligned eye problems was called orthoptics. Nowadays, the term orthoptist covers a much wider range of eye doctors who fix not only misaligned eye problems, but other types as well.

In natural vision correction, there are basically two main categories. The behavioral category of natural vision correction deals with eye problems other than misaligned eye, such as eye strain and focusing problems which have been the result of too much computer use. These types of eye doctors are call behavioral optometrists. If your vision is blurry and you can’t see clearly either close up or far away, a behavioral optometrist may be able to help you.

The second category under natural vision correction is “orthoptics”. Orthoptic optometrists are able to fix binocular eye problems such as strabismus.

The reason natural vision correction exists is so that people can correct their eye problems naturally and get rid of their glasses or contact lenses. Now, natural vision correction eye practitioners are good, as they are trained professionals and they know what they are talking about. However, their services aren’t usually covered by health insurance, and they can be quite expensive! Therefore, it is good to note that a do-it-yourself natural vision correction program can be just as effective and is way cheaper! The ones you can find online often have great support too.

The need by some for professional attention when it comes to eye disorders does not necessarily mean that home corrective interventions never work. Some do-it-yourself visual training techniques may actually fix your eye disorders especially refractive disorders like long-sightedness, short-sightedness, and astigmatism.

Other forms of natural vision correction that have been proven to work on those refractive errors include computer vision training, DVDs, audio CDs, and even iPod applications. The best and most complete are the all-in-one packages though.

It is important to mention that all the natural vision correction practices aimed at restoring normal functionalities of the eyes require patience and consistency on the part of the patients in order to be effective. Individuals should be able to gauge their own level of success in the improvement of vision if they are taking part in any natural vision correction program and make informed decisions regarding the next course of action depending on the results of their own assessment.

Eye Yoga Exercises To Keep Your Eyes Healthy

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

From time immemorial yoga has been considered as an effective way to exercise the mind and provide a fulfilling spiritual experience. It enhances the body’s general physical health. Well, you do not have to believe in everything there is to say about yoga, especially the whole thing about spirituality. Nevertheless, it is a matter of fact eye yoga exercises are an excellent means of exercising your eyes, relieving strain, and improving your eyesight.

The human eye is one of the most important body parts, but if you don’t take care of your eyes, your eyesight can begin to fade and get blurry. This weakened vision is due to tension in the eye, which is usually the result of too much staring at a computer screen, being exposed to air pollution, and having no exercise. The eye muscles then lose their flexibility and begin to weaken. However, by practicing eye yoga exercises, one’e eye muscles can be stretched and worked out so that they don’t become rigid and unable to function properly.

Now when you do eye yoga exercises, be sure to get yourself in a comfortable position somewhere, be it in your favorite chair, the couch, in your bed, or even in your favorite yoga position. Keep in mind that the only part of your body that should move during eye yoga exercises is your eyes. Remain still, and allow your brain to focus only on performing the eye yoga exercises.

In the motionless state of the body, allow your open eyes to wander about in different directions but in a consistent pattern. Control your breathing while avoiding tension at the same time. Focus on the movement of the eyes. Look upwards then downwards. Identify an object or a point upwards you can see with your raised eyes without overstretching. Do this four to eight times making sure each time you raise your eyes you are able to clearly spot the object or point.

Now look downwards, again without moving any other part of your body (not even the head). While looking down identify a spot you can see clearly without causing your eye muscles to strain. Do this four times and look at the point you identified every time you lower your eyes. All this time keep your breathing under control. During eye yoga exercises , also remember to blink a little to allow your eye muscles to relax and refocus.

Now to get a complete workout doing eye yoga exercises, you can’t just do the up and down exercise. You must also do left right and diagonal. Left, hold for 5, right, hold for 5, and repeat 4 more times for a total of 5 times. Once you are done the whole routine of ups/downs, lefts/rights, and diagonals, repeat all the eye yoga exercises 2 more times, for a total of 3 times. Frequent blinking and relaxation are important. Once you are done thje entire routine, close your eyes and let your eyes relax.
