We Are No Longer Twenty Years Old and Invincible

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

Ah youth. The time when you throw caution to the winds because you know you will always come out on top. Nobody can convince us differently.

Our twenties and early thirties are the times we feel invincible and are filled with idealism, energy and hope. The future is way out there. Now is what’s happening. Four or five hours of sleep is all we need to get back down to partying, studying, working and attending a few classes here and there.

And then the forties strike and we need eight hours of sleep a night to get through the day without noticeable sagging around mid-afternoon. If we have children in our homes, their boundless energy alone is enough to sap ours. Even in our thirties if our kids are rambunctious enough, we can feel the sag of maturity closing in. Suddenly our twenties look really, really good.

Twenty something’s generally pay no attention to the effect their choices may have on them later in life. They drink and smoke and pull all-nighters as if they will be 22 years old forever. Many have a cavalier attitude toward longevity saying they prefer to die young and healthy to old and infirm. This attitude disappears if the cavalier person lives to be fifty or so.

No matter what a twenty-something thinks, the truth is no one is invincible at any age. What we put into our bodies every living day does have consequences down the road. Some who are twenty years old now given a 30 year habit of smoking two packs a day will find these consequences in lung cancer. The heavy drinkers will find theirs in liver, pancreas or esophageal cancer.

Not good is that the bad habits we start early on in life are tough to break and we are apt to take up our bad habits before the age of reason. It’s a trite saying but true: habits are easy to make, hard to break.

On a lighter note, even if our youthful bad habits lead us to cancer as adults, the diagnosis of cancer is no longer a 100% fatal one. Scientists all over the globe have dedicated years of their lives to finding better treatments and even a cure for cancer. For the patient today diagnosed with cancer, there are more and more ways of fighting the dreadful disease giving them a second chance. Certainly doctors and scientists can offer no guarantees as there remains a lot about the disease of cancer that is unknown, but there are better treatments and much better prognosis for cancer patients than ever before.

Profound advancements have been made in medicine allowing many to beat cancer, which does not mean that we can cease taking care of our bodies. Medical breakthroughs are not a license to binge drink and smoke Marlboros to our hearts content. As adults, the responsibly is even heavier to encourage the younger generation to make wise decisions as they are clueless as to where those choices will lead them down the road.

So next time you are speaking with a group of teenagers in your life, make an attempt to pass on your wisdom gained from experience. I predict that at least one out of a hundred will listen to you and that one will forget what you said immediately. But speak up anyway, what the heck.

How to Die Without Regrets – Tips for Helping Parents to Prepare and Cope

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Many families don’t address end-of-life issues until it’s too late. Now is the time to discuss how to die with your aging parents. There are many issues to consider in order to make the transition smooth and to give your parents some peace of mind and closure.

Personal Care. It can be a frightening thought for your parents to consider that they may not be able to care for themselves one day. Ask them now while they’re still healthy where they want to live and who they want to care for them should they be unable to care for themselves one day. Always ask – never assume the answer to this all-important question.

Finances Matter. Most people cringe at the thought of openly discussing financial matters. But since you and your siblings may ultimately be responsible for your parents’ care, you need to ask their financial status. One crucial question to ask: Do you have long-term care insurance?

Creating a Memoir. Encourage your parents to write, record or dictate to you their unique personal stories. A memoir is a way to live on forever and it is often cherished by future generations.

Legal Instruments. There are many to choose from. Living trusts help families avoid costly probate. Power of attorney allows your parents to assign power to you or another person to act on their behalf in the handling of all business and legal matters in the event that they are unable to do this for themselves.

Both the living trust and the power of attorney are types of advance directives. Health care proxy and Five Wishes are also advance directives. And advance directive is basically just a legal instrument declaring your final wishes for your care should you be too incapacitated to speak for yourself.

A Last Will and Testament is a legal document that allows one to make arrangements for dependents, including pets. It also states where you would like your possessions to go after you are gone. In this document you can even state your funeral and burial wishes.

Good-Byes. As touchy and emotional as it may be for your parents, ask them to write personal good-bye letters to each of their kids. Again, if they’re not into writing, you could set up an audio or video recording for them. It’s another way for your parents to gain comfort and closure to their lives.

Approach these issues relating to how to die with your parents thoughtfully and with care and compassion. Doing so can help give them more of a sense of control and comfort over their lives. It’s a vulnerable time for most people but, if done properly, it can bring you all closer together as a family.

Wondering how to approach the topic of death with your older loved ones? Help your family prepare for dying by getting them a copy of the workbook How to Die Without Regrets and Have Closure by Katie and Dan Marsh.

Inability To Handle Stress Most Likely Leads To Early Death Unless…

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

If someone you love or you are a “worry-wart”, reading the rest of this article may prevent several deadly diseases and add years to your life. Allow me to explain. Why some people are healthy and others get sick has been a researched and heavily debated topic for a long, long time. Some give almost all the credit to genes. Basically you are pre-programmed at birth. Mother nature has dealt you a certain “hand” and that’s it. You will either be healthy, or sick, and there is nothing much you can do about it.

Let’s consider for example, the “cancer gene.” If cancer is “in your genes,” you’re doomed. If not, you’re lucky. Supporters of this philosophy commonly use this example as proof: One person is young, eats all the right food and exercises and still gets cancer or has a massive heart attack. Yet, someone else eats junk, smokes, drinks and never exercised a day in their life and lives to be 95.

Funny thing is you often hear these people say, “You can walk out of your house and get hit by a bus tomorrow,” as an excuse to completely neglect their health and future. Others don’t give genes much credit. They say it’s ALL (or at least MOST) how you live your life and take care of yourself. And then there are those somewhere in between. To them, both genes and how you live your life are important factors.

Their argument is that the youthful man or girl that took care of himself or herself and still got sick would have gotten sick sooner. And, the 99 year-old may have lived even longer if he or she took care of himself or herself. Obviously, all this is something to think about. Genes obviously have something to do with our potential. But by how much is it? And is it as limiting as many once thought? The simple fact that our average life span is much different today than it was a century ago should tell you something. There are factors that affect our lifespan and help determine if we live those years healthy and happy or sick and miserable. Which you decide is important.

According to an April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily, there is a broad consensus that there are five basic personality traits in most individuals. These five personality traits are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience. There are also sub-categories – but these five are what makes us up overall. But here’s what’s really important in all of this. Two of these traits are emotional stability and conscientiousness. These appear to be directly linked to your health and how long you may live. How is this? In psychology, the lack of emotional stability is called neuroticism. In other words, it’s a person’s tendency towards hand wringing and negative thinking. It is believed by many that high levels of neuroticism are inherited and such people do not handle pressure very well. They are often moody, anxious and uncomfortable in their daily activity. Studies have also shown a correlation to increased mortality rates in these individuals.

So, if “neuroticism” is inherited and leads to health problems and increased mortality, are some people simply pre-programmed to be unhealthy and die young? That’s where a Purdue University psychologist comes into the picture. According to the April 5, 2007 issue of Science Daily: “Mroczek decided to explore this idea. Using a standard measure of neuroticism, he tracked more than 1,600 men over 12 years, recording not only how neurotic they were at the start, but also whether they got more or less neurotic over time. He also looked at mortality risk for these same men over an 18-year span. As reported in the May issue of Psychological Science, those who increased over time in neuroticism was a ticket to an early grave. In other words, these men–all middle age or older to begin with–did not grow old gracefully. They likely got more and more stressed, worried or fretful, and this downward spiral increased their risk for dying, mostly from cancer and heart disease. The good news is that men with a fretful temperament, if they managed for whatever reason to calm down a bit over time, had survival rates similar to those of emotionally stable men.”

So what’s the big lesson here in regards to your health and your longevity? First, it seems pretty clear your outlook does a whole heck of a lot more than just affect your success in business! Several studies show the way you think can have a weighty impact on how fit or under par you are. Namely diseases like cancer and heart disease. How? We don’t think anybody knows 100% for sure. It makes sense that pressure and the way you handle it produces chemicals like cortisol that suppress the immune system. This will have countless detrimental effects like aging.

But the real point here is what’s the difference? Who really cares exactly how all this works on the cellular level? The bottom line is: it happens. Negative thinking, a lot of it, over a comprehensive period of time will almost certainly age you, make you ill and take years off your life. And, an even more important point: altering the way you think and handle stress can stop the process.

How do you learn to deal with stress if you are a natural born “worry-wart?” The first thing is to realize NOTHING is ever as good or bad as it seems. And always change the things you can and forget about the things you can’t. Besides that, routine exercise programs and meditation have both been shown to reduce stress. Maybe if we start enjoying this wonderful life a little – it will get even better and we will get more of it! You can change the way you handle stress and reduce the negative effects. Or, at least that’s what the above-mentioned study shows. And it only makes sense. Have you ever taken a walk in the dark and had some loud noise scare you? What happened? Your eyes widened. Your heartbeat drastically increased. Your brain signaled your body to produce adrenalin and other “flight or fight” chemicals were dumped into your bloodstream. At that very moment, you were wide awake, stronger than usual and could run like an Olympic track star! But what happens shortly afterward? You crash… right? You come back down and feel exhausted. This, my friends, is a natural high and hangover. When you are constantly stressed and worry and don’t deal with it well… you will continually go through a similar reaction. Your body and mind basically go through the ringer. It just makes sense that if you learn how to deal with the stress more effectively – you will be healthier and lives longer. A Normal Experience: Vigiling For The Dying

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

To be lucky enough to spend quality time with a loved one during the end of life is the most fulfilling experience a person can hope to have. These moments of getting to know each other better than ever before is certainly a reason to consider vigiling for the dying.

Being at peace with the matters at hand and understanding yourself makes you ready to provide a calm loving attention. You must remain in a comfortable state in order to help any other person, and knowing your own needs and getting them met will make this far more pleasant for all concerned.

Discuss issues openly and honestly. Let them know exactly how you much you care for them, what you want, and why. Ask them gently what they would like you to do. It is crucial that everyone work the same plan, even if it means compromising on a few things, the result will be much more rewarding for all people concerned.

Even though no one gets everything their way, it does not mean chaos. This is the perfect time to focus on learning each other?s needs and requirements but you need to have some leeway for making changes along the way. Everyone likes to have some alone time, but compromise is the only way to achieve balance and peace.

It is very natural for people to review their lives; we all do it, every day. Sometimes we touch on regrets and need to work through them. If your loved one seems to be troubled with something, be gentle in trying to understand their side. Any business that is left undone should be taken care of immediately so it takes a load off everyone?s minds. Doing so will return the calm and peace and is vital to maintaining an uplifting mood.

It is our nature to want to check on people who might need assistance, but try to do so without always being obvious. Daily routines like dish washing, laundry, cooking, other cleaning or knitting can be a good reason to be in the same room with them, without them feeling as if they are nothing but a bother. Just ask them politely if they need anything while you are there, and otherwise go about your normal daily matters.

When you have to attend errands, or any other matters, take them with you if they are able to be out of bed. This is not the time to leave them out of the activity. It is the time to include them as if there were no other possibility. Plan outings and activities that will keep them occupied and enjoying life and maintain that companionship that so vitally important.

Keep this in mind, human beings are unlike the rest of the animal kingdom. We have the ability to properly care for our relatives, friends and neighbors. We get to enjoy all of life, and that enjoyment is what rewards us the most.

Is A Life Insurance Broker Really Necessary?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The simplest answer to that question is, no. However, there are definitely times when an insurance broker can be helpful. They can actually save you a considerable amount of money.

Whether you need to purchase car, health or life insurance, there are a lot of companies to choose from, and an equally large number of complicated plans available for consumers. Making sense of those plans can be daunting, especially if you have not had experience with them before. It’s for this reason that securing an insurance broker can be a wise move.

A life insurance broker is, fundamentally, a go-between. They step between you and the insurance company. In fact, it’s their job to seek out the lowest insurance policy. Because an insurance broker does not work for any specific company, they are able to develop relationships with numerous insurance companies. This allows them to hunt for the best options, answer questions, and point you in the right direction, as far as your insurance needs are concerned.

Once you have chosen your broker, simply give them your details and needs. At that point, it’s the broker’s job to sort through the surfeit of options available, looking for the best deal. The broker will give you multiple quotes to choose from, and this will allow you to compare several insurance estimates from the leading companies. Using that information, you can make an informed decision on which one will work best for your particular situation.

Because they do not work for any one company, a broker must be familiar with all the leading insurance companies. They know the reputation of each one. They also know how the company operates. They can answer important questions, as well as inform you about such things as how often premium increases occur, and how they handle claims.

Insurance brokers work on commission. The insurance companies pay them for every policy they sell. If you were to go to the company, and purchase a similar policy, you could not get it at a cheaper cost. What that means is that using a broker to help you find the best policy costs you nothing more, and it takes a great deal of stress off your shoulders. The broker does the research and deals with all the frustrations of weeding out the better polices. All you have to do is consider the options he presents for you, and make a decision on which one is going to work best.

One of the biggest benefits a broker offers is his or her expansive knowledge of the marketplace. Not only can they find you the policy you need, they can do it quickly. They can also get you exactly the kind of coverage you want, at a price that would be hard for you to match. Brokers understand the technicalities of insurance contracts, and they can make sense of all the small print. They also have answers for your questions. Choosing to use a broker is an astute decision.

Whale Trainer Killed In Killer Whale Attack At SeaWorld Orlando

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Tilikum, a 5 tonne orca has killed it’s trainer by dragging her into the pool and thrashing her underwater. The event occurred at SeaWorld Orlando as the trainer, Dawn Brancheau was chatting with visitors after a show. Onlookers said the whale “thrashed her all around” and pulled her under the water.

Police state that Brancheau “slipped and fell” into the tank but over 50 witnesses confirm that the event was no accident, the trainer was reportedly stroking the whale before it swam away and darted back grabbing the trainer out of the air in its mouth before shaking her violently underwater.

Brancheau, a 40 year old who was married with no children, was an experienced whale trainer and had previously commented on the dangers involved with her job, “You can’t put yourself in the water unless you trust them and they trust you.” After a visit to SeaWorld at the age of nine, Brancheau had dreamt of working as a whale trainer.

30 year old Tilikum, whose name means ‘fierce’ in the native Indian Chinook language, had reportedly acted abnormally and did not react to directions in an earlier show. Trainers had previously been forbidden from swimming with the animal because of its variable temper. Questions are being raised as to whether the 5 tonne killer whale should be allowed to continue working near humans as it is the third fatality he has been linked to.

In 1991 Tilly was blamed as one of three whales behind the death of a trainer at Sealand of the Pacific in Victoria, British Columbia and in 1999 the body of Daniel Dukes was found in Tilly’s tank after policed had determined the man sneaked into the compound at night.

General Manager of SeaWorld, Dan Brown, had to hold back tears while he stated that the company’s safety procedures will be an enquiry into the safety procedures while the park remains closed and shows at their other shows are cancelled.
