An agency specializing in senior home care, will work with the client’s doctors and family members and helping the client to remain as independent and comfortable at home for as long as possible. Signing up with a local service doesn’t have to be a chore, but you do keep a few things in mind:
Don’t choose blindly. Do research on each and every care service you find. How long have they been providing care? Are they licensed or certified? Do they have a website where you can read other clients? reviews? How qualified are they to give medical care and to what degree? Will the agency provide you with employee references?
Senior home care isn’t cheap, but it shouldn’t break the bank for you or your parent. In today’s economy, a good company can’t afford not to make a deal with you. However, be sure that the company you choose to work with offers everything you will need as a client.
At the same time, don’t just grab the most expensive company either. Just because they are a large company or charge a huge amount for care doesn’t mean that they are any better than the less costly one. Look at all the options to find which will be the best option for you and your parent.
Don’t overlook anything. what type of care will the client be needing? Help with daily chores? Rehabilitation therapy? Delivery of medication? A registered nurse? A respiratory therapist? Be sure that the services you seek are the same as the services that they provide.
Be bold and ask a lot of questions. This is an important decision and you want to make sure that you have a good repore with the caregiver. What time can they be in your home to work? What days will they work? How much work is expected out of the care giver? While you are at it, find out if your expectations are too high for the company.
Don’t forget to read the fine print. How will you be paying for the senior home care? Will it be paid by a third party such as Medicare, Medicaid, the Veterans Administration or even a health insurance company? If so, some third party payers will have specific requirements met before they will shell out the money to pay for the service. Be sure to check with your provider that they meet all of these requirements.
Lastly, don’t forget who you’re getting the senior home care for in the first place. If you family member, the client, doesn’t feel comfortable or safe with the service you provide for them, then you’ll be walking in a very difficult situation. The care should be comforting just as their home is.
