Alcoholism is considered to be a disease, and affects earnings as such. The physical and mental health problems associated with problem drinking have direct effects on labour market productivity and reliability. That is, sickness, hangover, late arrivals, extended lunch breaks, and early departures are some work characteristics that lead to reduced reliability and productivity.

This in turn leads to lessened earnings and fewer promotions and raises. Alcohol dependence can develop over the years and follows a generally predictable pattern. A tolerance of alcohol develops first, which means a person needs to consume greater quantities of alcohol before the same effects are noticed. Over time, the person may lose control over their drinking and may not be able to stop even if they want to. And if alcohol consumption is reduced or stopped, withdrawal symptoms can be experienced which can range from annoying to life-threatening.

Due to various reasons, they will not want to accept that they need any kind of treatment. Since they are with their alcoholism, their bodies have become immune to alcohol and in fact most of the emotions that they feel will be a direct consequence of their alcoholism. The biggest problem of an alcoholic is denial. They will not easily accept that they have any problem with their alcoholism. They feel that consuming alcohol suits their status and also they have been consuming alcohol since a very long time.

Alcoholism has spread like an epidemic everywhere around the globe. It is not only the young, but also the older people who are succumbing to alcohol addiction. It is often difficult to detect if a person is an alcoholic because they may have been drinking and yet doing all the work and activities that any normal person does. They are called functional alcoholics as they are very unaware of their problem, having always been able to perform all the day-to-day activities.Hence it becomes more difficult to bring them out of the addiction. For example, they may have become familiar to consume alcohol whenever they are in depression. This makes the alcohol addiction closely connected.

It also produces a physical dependence and when it does, it becomes a chronic disease. The use of too much alcohol, like drugs, can also increase tolerance and produce withdrawal symptoms. Like drugs, alcoholism can lead to family, health and social problems. It also causes health problems that are potentially life threatening, such as liver cirrhosis and cancer .

Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Alcoholism, also known as alcohol dependence, is a disease that includes the following four symptoms: Craving – A strong need, or urge, to drink. Loss of control- Not being able to stop drinking once drinking has begun. Physical dependence- Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety after stopping drinking. Tolerance-The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol to get “high.”

Alcohol has been consumed for thousands of years by almost all civilizations. Americans have been drinking alcohol since the country was founded and in moderation, it can be a relaxing beverage. Many people come home from a hard day of work and unbind with a drink.

How do you know, though, when that relaxing drink has taken over your life? How do you know when you become depend on it? Alcohol abuse in America is becoming a serious problem. Many people used to believe that alcohol abuse was a characteristic of a weak person, but now it is known that it is really a serious disease that has a chance of affecting us all.

A surprising statistic is that 1 in 13 adults is affected by alcohol abuse. The online health guide, WebMD reported that in the United States alone, 12 to 14 millions adults abuse the substance and each year, around 100,000 adults will die from alcohol abuse. It also affects many other things in daily life, including increased rates of job absenteeism, and increases reports of domestic violence and child abuse. It has also been proven that alcohol abuse is a large factor in most of the country’s car accidents, suicides and homicides.

Counselors approaching the condition as a medical disease will recommend different treatment processes and goals than, for instance, those approaching the condition as one of social choice. Treatments for alcohol abuse are quite varied in keeping with the multiple perspectives of the condition itself. Most treatments focus on helping abusers completely discontinue their alcohol intake, as well as providing life training and/or social support to help them resist a return to alcohol use.

Since alcohol abuse involves many factors which encourage a person to continue drinking (psychological/social, physical, and neurochemical), all of these factors must be addressed in order to successfully prevent a return to active alcohol use.

The most common approach to alcohol abuse treatment is detoxification followed by a combination of supportive therapy, and ongoing development of coping mechanisms, attendance at self-help groups. The treatment community for alcohol abuse typically supports an abstinence-based approach, as studies have shown that the vast majority of people who abuse alcohol cannot learn to drink in moderation.

The effectiveness of alcohol abuse treatments vary from successful to counterproductive. When considering the effectiveness of treatment options, it is important to consider the percentage of those who drop out of a program, not just those who complete it. Most programs can boast a high cure rate for those who complete it because most people only complete a program if it works for them. It is also important to consider not just the percentage of those reaching sobriety but how many of those experience relapsing.

Get Out OF The Alcohol Disease

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Is alcoholism an incurable disease or is it something that can be overcome? For millions and millions of people this has been a topic that has been debated for years. Many people have been told that their alcoholism is something that they will always have and that by putting their faith in a higher power that they will be their only chance of recovery. Though even with this apathetic form of therapy, they are still told that relapse is part of recovery and that they will probably have slip ups on their way.

One of the great controversies in respect of treatment of alcohol problems is the debate of whether alcoholism is a disease. There is little doubt that regarding alcoholism as a disease, rather than as a moral weakness, has brought benefits to alcoholics/addicts. To some extent it reduced the stigma experienced by sufferers and has opened the door to treatment rather than punishment. It is the mainstay of the belief system of AA and NA groups who have been responsible for helping many to recover from a hopeless state. However there are many critics of the disease model, both on the grounds that there is little evidence to support it and that it may in fact be detrimental to recovery.

There are many definitions of what constitutes and what causes alcoholism. This makes it more difficult for the drinker to admit a problem and also makes it easier to argue that they don’t have a problem. For most people, even today, the word alcoholic still carries a lot of shame. It suggests a damaged person somebody who is different from the rest of society, who has a different psychological or genetic makeup and therefore can’t drink. It is very difficult for most people to admit that they are different in any way from everyone else, it is even more difficult if that difference carries with it a sense of shame. Consider how difficult it is admit being different, if that means having to give up something that most people enjoy without any problem.

Alcoholism in a person can be caused because of several factors. One hypothesis is that some people have genetic predispositions which cause them to get intoxicated easier or more intensely or have fewer side effects or hangover symptoms than others. This causes them to drink more indiscriminately or carelessly than many others. Also, many people become alcoholic due to emotional reasons; they do not like how they feel when not intoxicated, so they drink excessively, just to feel alright. Some people, when experiencing loneliness, anxiety or depression turn to alcohol in order to feel more comfortable. This is because alcohol can have anxiety-inhibiting effects, if taken in sufficient amounts.

Alcohol is a word that appears so much in our daily lives and culture that it is difficult for a non-alcoholic to imagine a life of alcohol addiction. Yet, no matter how much one may despise the term and the addiction, psychiatrists describe an alcoholic as one who exhibits any or all of these qualities: an irresistible thirst for alcohol, total loss of control once he or she starts drinking, and a certain tendency of relapse into the addiction after a session of rehabilitation.

Alcoholism addiction is more widely spread in today’s society in addition to smoking, either by the accessibility, cost or lack of prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages. The increasing consumption of alcohol is a real problem with large economic and social impact. These range from diseases of body of the drinker to family breakdowns and changes in system productivity.

It is often difficult to detect if a person is an alcoholic because they may have been drinking and yet doing all the work and activities that any normal person does. They are called functional alcoholics as they are very unaware of their problem, having always been able to perform all the day-to-day activities. Seeking help from a trained professional is the wisest thing that you could do. To overcome this destructive disease, there are support groups, medical and alternative therapies available. With will, determination and the willingness to deal with the problems behind the addiction, you can come out of it.

Symptoms Of Alcohol Withdrawal

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Alcohol withdrawal refers to a group of symptoms that may occur from suddenly stopping the use of alcohol after chronic or prolonged ingestion. The symptoms can range from mild to severe. Degree of severity and number of symptoms often depends on how long a person has used alcohol habitually, and how much alcohol one has used on a regular basis.

People who have consumed small amounts of alcohol for a short period of time usually experience only mild alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Those who have used large amounts of alcohol for a long period of time can have extremely severe symptoms, called delirium tremens (DTs), which can be life-threatening.

Alcohol withdrawal usually occurs in adults, but it may occur in teenagers or children as well. It can occur when a person who uses alcohol excessively suddenly stops drinking alcohol. Withdrawal usually occurs within 5 – 10 hours after the last drink, but it may occur up to 7 – 10 days later.

The more heavily you drink every day, the more likely you will develop alcohol withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. The likelihood of developing severe withdrawal symptoms also increases if you have other medical problems.

There are more than physical alcohol withdrawal symptoms to be dealt with as a person recovers from alcoholism. There are some dramatic mental and psychological issues that will have to be dealt with as well. These might include fatigue, severe moods swings and anxiety attacks that can occur without warning. These symptoms can also include irritability, nervousness, emotional instability and prolonged periods of depression and uncontrollable trembling. Many people in recovery also say they experience severe nightmares and have trouble thinking clearly.

Recent evidence shows that it may be important to treat every person who is experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Having said this, it can be noted that approximately 95% of the alcoholics who quit drinking alcohol suffer from mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms and can normally be treated on an out-patient basis by a healthcare professional.

So the first question that should be asked when experiencing alcohol withdrawal symptoms is probably not “what helps for alcohol withdrawals?” but rather “who should I contact about the alcohol withdrawal symptoms I am experiencing”? And the best answer to this latter question is this: seek medical assistance immediately so that your doctor, urgent care center personnel, healthcare provider, or emergency room doctor can assess the severity of your withdrawal symptoms and suggest the best option for treatment.

A number of different techniques exist for managing alcohol withdrawal. While some of these treatments use medications, many do not. In fact, according to the current research literature, it appears that the safest way to treat mild withdrawal symptoms is without medications. Such forms of non-drug detoxification use screening and extensive social support during the withdrawal process. Other non-drug detox programs use vitamin therapy (especially thiamin) and proper nutrition in treating mild withdrawal symptoms.

Alcohol Abuse Treatment May Be The Answer

Sunday, February 21st, 2010

Alcohol abuse treatment delivers experience and guidance to those struggling with alcohol abuse, helping you achieve sobriety by overcoming one obstacle at a time. It is not easy for somebody to recover from alcohol abuse, and it is impossible to do it without the right kind of help.

There are many different elements to alcohol abuse treatment.

If somebody were able to quit drinking cold turkey, relapse would be unavoidable. That’s because alcohol abuse is merely a symptom of a bigger, underlying problem. In order to achieve lasting sobriety, each element of addiction must be treated together, and individually.

That’s why alcohol abuse treatment is composed of various elements, each focused on different elements of addiction, and the delivery of treatment is always customized to each unique individual. By combining these variable factors into a customized package, each patient will have a sufficiently greater chance of lasting recovery from alcohol addiction.

Why Detox is the safest way to quit drinking

While detox is a safer, healthier alternative to quitting cold turkey (and much more effective than simply ‘cutting back a little’ this only treats the physical element of alcohol in the body. If somebody abuses alcohol on a constant basis, they may become physically dependant on having so much alcohol in their blood stream. Whether the alcohol abuse is excessive in spurts (‘binge drinking’) or frequent consumption (‘alcohol dependency’, or ‘alcoholic’) the physical control must be treated first.

Detox is a healthier alternative to quitting cold turkey, because a person is cleansed of the harmful toxins that have a physical control over their body. This is done in a medical setting to prevent dangerous relapse (many overdoses are a result of failed attempts to quit in an uncontrolled setting.) During this process, a patient will be given nutritious meals and medicine to ease the pain and ensure a speedy, healthy recovery.

How alcohol abuse treatment works to treat the entire problem

Counseling is one of the most essential stages of successful alcohol abuse treatment, and it is so powerful that there are two different types of counseling which both work together to lay the foundation for a lasting recovery.

Group counseling provides an environment for patients to relate with peers and identify common obstacles, and to develop strategic plans to overcome those obstacles. Likewise, individual counseling provides an intimate atmosphere for patients to identify their personal, unique challenges and, yes, to develop a strategic plan to overcome those obstacles.

Alcohol abuse treatment is always an ongoing process.

A person can spend the rest of their lives never touching another drop of alcohol… but they are still a recovering alcoholic. Abuse treatment for any addiction is an ongoing process that requires active participation and a willingness to live a happier, healthier life.

The truth about alcohol abuse treatment is that it does work… but it is not a magical cure. In order for a patient to fully recover from alcohol abuse, he or she must understand that it is an ongoing process, or action, and they must be willing to follow their program and actively live sober.

The alcohol abuse treatment we offer is one of the most effective way to deal with alcohol problems. You can find in this site a lot of help and advice about alcohol abuse to guide you.
