Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Are you running away from things you were supposed to do? Are you feeling bad about something and are unable to keep it away from you? Do you feel you are not who you used to be?? You my friend are suffering from depression. Don’t panic and its not just you.

Today an estimated 12 million adults in US itself suffer from depression. Around in the world around 1 out of every 6 individual’s suffers from it. Generally this disorder begins in early adulthood but can occur at any age. Depression is common to people of all sorts of cast, creed or race. Statistics prove that women are more prone to have depression, it is hypothesized that this is more as men are less likely to seek treatment and speak openly about it.

Depression occurs in various grades and has varying symptoms and intensity. Medically speaking, depression is a state of low mood and aversion to activity. There are few who consider it to be a dysfunction while the others consider it to be an adaptive defense mechanism. Traditionally speaking depressed at times is also used as synonym for sad. An individual suffering from depression experiences feelings of sadness, helplessness and hopelessness.

At times people might suffer from slight depression, which is the milder form of depression which has minor consequence. One might be slightly depressed over a loss of a job or may be over break up of a romantic relationship. Loss of some one near and dear one might also result in slight depression. It is reversible and short term in nature. It might result in sadness, insomnia, irritability and feeling tired. Most people get over slight depression with time and supportive therapy.

It is the mild and the severe depression which affects the most. Generally mild depression might start for no reason. The individual might start feeling tired and restless. People try shunning all sorts of company. Mild depression lasts for a lot longer than slight depression. If not cured properly individual’s might develop severe depression from mild depression. One can be overcome with changes in lifestyle, psychotherapy and social support. This might lead to suicidal tendencies. In severe cases of depression one might constantly feel sad and cry for no apparent reason.

It is medically proved that slight depression has a cause but both mild and severe depressions are generally not well understood and are complex disorders. At times mild depression is related to the environment which is not as per an individual’s expectations.

Though many people have tried but none was able to understand why severe depression occurs. Medical practitioners have tried all they could. Some studies reveal that severe depression may be more common in families. They did brain imaging studies but it was not able to explain the exact neurotransmitters in the brain which play an important role in depression. The exact cause is still unknown but there are several risk factors that can trigger or increase the risk of depression.

There are also correlations between long term sleep difficulties and depression. Up to 90% of patients with depression are found to have sleep difficulties.. Other biological influences of depression are varied, but may relate to malnutrition, heredity, hormones, seasons, stress, illness, drug or alcohol use, neurotransmitter malfunction, long-term exposure to dampness and mold, back injury, and to aerosol exposure.

Various Reasons For Getting Addicted

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Its been said that just as there is one disorder or disease labeled asthma, there would be one for addiction, covering all addictions; gambling, smoking, overeating, drugs, etc. It has been believed by many researchers that addiction is both a behavior which can be controlled to some extent and also a brain disease. Plus, since some testing with functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) found that all addictions tend to cause nearly the same reactions inside the brain, there could be one type of control model for addiction health-related issues. Then one main treatment strategy or plan could be used to treat all addictions.

There are quite many essential components of addiction that are considered non-biological. These include cultural and social values, situational factors, ritual, developmental variations, personality differences and cognitive bias. One has to get the hang of the reality of addiction, all of these components must be considered and understood.

Environmental risk factors are characteristics in a person’s surroundings that increase their likelihood of becoming addicted to drugs. A person may have many environments, or domains, of influence such as the community, family, school and friends. Their risk of addiction can develop in any of these domains.

Using drugs or other substances becomes abusive and categorized as a “disorder” when the use begins to cause continuing or growing problems in the user’s life. These problems include missing work or school, driving under the influence, legal problems, and problems with friends or family relationships.

Individuals can easily be coerced into initiating and continuing behaviors such as drug use when surrounded by influential peers. Behavior is closely tied to the social and peer groups to which a person belongs. Peer pressure exerts a powerful influence over adolescents and to a lesser, but not trivial, degree over adults.

The common pattern for drug abusers is to conceal its symptoms. If you’re worried that a friend or family member might be abusing drugs, look for the following warning signs like Bloodshot eyes or pupils that are larger or smaller than usual. Changes in appetite or sleep patterns. Sudden weight loss or weight gain. Deterioration of physical appearance and personal grooming habits.

You may thing the substance seem to solve the problem or make life better, so you use the drug more and more, but you are highly mistaken. The path to drug addiction starts with experimentation. You or your loved one may have tried drugs out of curiosity, because friends were doing it, or in an effort to erase another problem.

Furthermore, prolonged drug use eventually brings its own host of problems, including major disruptions to normal, daily functioning. Unfortunately, the psychological, physical, and social consequences of drug abuse and addiction become worse than the original problem you were trying to cope with or avoid. But while drugs might make you feel better in the short-term, attempts to self-medicate ultimately backfire. Instead of treating the underlying problem, drug use simply masks the symptoms. Take the drug away and the problem is still there, whether it be low self-esteem, anxiety, loneliness, or an unhappy family life.

Trying To Understand Addiction

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

For those who have an addiction, or for those affected by the addiction of a loved one or close friend, it’s clear what an addiction means in “real” terms. Difficult to define exactly, it has become popular to think of almost any behavior that has a compulsive quality as an “addiction.” Addictions come in all shapes and forms.

There are people with mental health problems use different substances to self-medicate, but end up making things worse. The research gathered at the Centre for Addictions and Mental Health in Ontario, more than half of people with substance use disorders also have mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. The relationship between mental health issues and substance use is convoluted.

The removal of the drug or activity causes painful withdrawal symptoms. There are known to be some very common characteristics of destructive addictions such as substance activity or activity that triggers must initially cause feelings of pleasure and changes in emotion or mood. More than physical tolerance, an addiction develops physical and psychological dependence separate from the need to avoid the pain of withdrawal. The body develops a physical tolerance to the substance or activity, so people with addictions so people must take larger and larger amounts of a substance to feel the same effects.

These changes that occur are also responsible, in large part, for the drug cravings and compulsion to use that make addiction so powerful. As we all know answer lies in the brain. Repeated drug use alters the brain-causing long-lasting changes to the way it looks and functions. These changes in brain interfere with your ability to think clearly, exercise good judgment, control your behavior, and feel normal without drugs.

The problem is the brain doesn’t realize what it is that is causing the ecstasy reaction. So when this flutter of activity increases the creation of dopamine for the negative behaviors and substances like drugs, alcohol, gambling, etc., it neglects the natural survival instinct reaction mechanisms, replacing them with the ecstasy instead.

Addiction indefinitely causes psychological, chemical, and anatomical changes in the brain. It develops after an initial exposure to the addicting substance or activity. That initial exposure lets addiction to develop, but addiction does not always develop. The cycle of quitting the addictive behavior, going through withdrawal, and relapsing may become self-reinforcing.

Some people inherit a vulnerability to the addictive properties of drugs. Studies have shown that the risk of substance use disorders is higher for people who have a close relative with addictions. It’s been argued that in some cases, using substances to self-medicate is a learned behavior to cope with stress. Even if a person has a genetic vulnerability to addiction, it does not necessarily mean he will become an addict.

Close and dear ones play a strong role in substance abuse recovery. There is always a reason why a person develops an addiction. With support from family members who are non-judgmental, a person with addictions is more likely to stay in treatment and have a successful outcome.More often than not other factors that are behind addictions include chaos in the family unit, poverty, having physical, emotional or sexual abuse in the past or present to deal with or conflict.

Alcoholism Is Bad

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Alcoholism is the inability to control or ignore a strong craving for alcohol. People suffering from alcoholism often find that they need the aid of alcohol to feel good or normal. They often crave alcohol, but this craving is much stronger than the occasional craving people have for certain foods. Alcoholics as well as addicts are told to give up trying to use their own power, to admit powerlessness and depend on a higher power to help them. This is the twelve-step approach to getting an alcoholic to stop using and maintain him or herself in a state of recovery.

It is the most frequent abnormality observed in most alcoholics. It occurs as a result of changes in fat metabolism induced by alcohol. In some cases produces no clinical manifestations, but in others, causing specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort and weight loss.Alcohol can trigger various clinical in the liver, among which we highlight. Fatty liver and alcohol- It is the accumulation of fat inside liver cells .

Alcoholic hepatitis by alcohol- Generally they are chronic alcoholics, following a high intake, present a picture of loss of appetite, tiredness, nausea and vomiting. After several days, there is pain in the upper right abdomen, fever and yellowing of the skin and mucous membranes. Alcoholic hepatitis is the step immediately prior to cirrhosis, favoring the continued development of alcohol consumption, especially in women. Alcoholic liver cirrhosis by alcohol is another problem.

Drug and alcohol relapse happens much the same way the addiction manifested itself in the first place. That is, by a series of counterproductive occurrences that can create a downward spiral. The relapse brings about the return of the alcohol or drug addiction in the person’s life and the self-destructive pattern that was associated with it. The path to alcohol and drug addiction recovery is lost and replaced by the addiction all over again. Some relapse factors may include stress, frustration, anger, temptation, relationship problems, social pressure and a major life change.

A program prepares the addict both mentally and physically for the challenges that he/she might face from the withdrawal symptoms that can arise. Apart form this, there is also the support and attention from qualified staff that will help the alcoholic even more.An alcohol detoxification program is one of the most effective ways to prepare an addict for recovery from alcoholism.

If there is a slight presence of alcohol in the blood stream, this will greatly affect the recovery process. Alcoholics who show traces of alcohol in the blood are not admitted into after care programs because the likelihood of there resisting the urges to drink alcohol is greatly reduced.

Alcohol addiction is a tumor which turns malignant with every passing day of ignorance and carelessness. The occasional drinking habit turns into a regular affair, if treated casually it becomes the necessity for sustenance. And when you find out that it is quite impossible to live without a bottle of liquor everyday , you can announce to yourself that you are addicted to alcohol.

Do You Have Gambling Problem?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Do you think you are so capable that you can easily avert gambling problem?? Well over confidence kills at times and you need to be cautious. Did you know that experts have classified it as one of the fastest and dangerously growing addictions?

They say it can be said it consists of three steps viz. winning, losing and desperation. There are both social and economic costs involved when someone is addicted to gambling. People who gamble to excess often suffer from feelings of depression and anxiety, as well as muscular tension, fatigue, headaches and high blood pressure. Apart from this, they might also be subjected to poverty, starvation, family disintegration and criminal behavior.

The first state associated with gambling is the winning stage. It is considered to be fun and innocuous, but the behaviors of someone in this first stage of gambling addiction are subtle signs of a decent into a compulsive gambling addiction. In this stage the addict begins to gamble more often. Although gambling may still be occasional, the time in between gambling begins to shorten. Gambling also begins to be a part of life as the gambler starts to enjoy the high or escape that gambling provides to him or her. The gambler also begins to talk about his or her gambling experiences more often, as winning streaks, or a big win become justification for more gambling.

During this stage of gambling addiction, the gambling addict is still having fun and has not suffered any real consequences as a result of his or her gambling and consequently the family and friends rarely see any problems. The duration of this winning stage of gambling addiction varies, but is generally much shorter for the video poker gambler than for the race track gambler. The second stage of gambling addiction is the losing stage of gambling addiction and this is the stage at which problems begin to become more obvious and the fun and euphoria of the winning stage begins to fade away.

In the losing stage of gambling addiction, the addict begins to gamble much more often, often making gambling a ritual. Bets become larger as the addict needs to put more on the line to feel the same level of euphoria from the winning stage of gambling addiction. The gambler also bets more often, trying to win back losses as soon as possible. More free time is spent gambling, home and work life often begin to suffer as a result of excess time spent gambling. The addict begins to be preoccupied with gambling, often taking out loans to finance continued gambling. Often, because of losses and deteriorating financial situations, the addict will feel depression and anxiety and try to hide his gambling from family and loved ones. The losing stage of gambling is easily recognizable by an astute observer, but it still often overlooked by friends and family who have no reason to suspect that anything has gone wrong.

The depression stage of gambling addiction is the final stage and this is when the gambling addict experiences more extreme depression and anxiety over mounting financial pressures and continued gambling loses. It is in this final stage that gambling addicts often try to steal or commit crimes to finance continued gambling after they have already sold all of their belongings. The gambler will become increasingly isolated from friends and loves ones, feeling desperate to have a change of luck with their gambling.

Once the depression stage of gambling addiction has taken effect, most all gambling addicts consider suicide, and about 1/3 of them attempt it. Many additional addictions can take root as a result of gambling addiction. While gambling may have been the escape to begin with, once it has become the very source of depression and anxiety, many addicts begin to drink or abuse drugs as an escape from their initial escape, which has turned into a nightmare. Many gambling addicts who turn to crime and robbery to finance their gambling addiction are arrested and charged with crimes to be permanently on their criminal records.

While relapse is a risk no matter what stage gambling addiction is treated, like with any addiction, it is always best to address it as early as possible for the best chances at success without relapse. The best time to address gambling addiction is in the winning stage, when things still seem to be fine and there aren’t are glaring signs of a problem, but it is difficult to recognize the signs if one does not know what to look for. Generally, by the time a gambling addict gets to the depression stage of gambling addiction, there are additional problems to address and the overall addiction and compulsive behavioral problems have become so complex, that it takes longer and more intense treatment for success.

Keep Away From Smoking

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Are you one of those who like inhaling and then slowly exhaling the smoke out? Are you one of those who habitually follow one of the oldest practices of the world?

Medically defined as the practice in which a substance is burned and the smoke is tasted or inhaled. This is more commonly practiced as a practice of recreational drugs with the main motive of absorbing the nicotine in it. This is done by normally stuffing tobacco inside it. It is more of a recreational practice but at times it is also used as a spiritual ritual.

Tobacco smoking today is more than any other form of smoking and is practiced by over one billion people in the majority of all human societies. Though there are many smoking tools include pipes, hookahs and bongs but the most popular one is cigarette. There are other less common drugs like opium and cannabis and most of these are prohibited drugs.

Smoking is not a new phenomenon. In fact the history of smoking dates back all the way to 5000 BC, and has been recorded in almost all the cultures across the world. During this period smoking was evolved with religious ceremonies which involved offerings to deities. Indian or Arab traders, around the year 1200 were responsible for spreading of cannabis smoking to the Sub-Saharan Africa. In fact it was spread on the same trade routes as those that carried coffee, which originated around the highlands of Ethiopia. An Ethiopian invention of smoking in calabash water pipes with smoking bowls was later conveyed to other parts of Africa.

The discovery of America is at times credited for the spread of tobacco smoking practice. In fact while the Europeans reached America, they followed the of rituals where native priests smoked themselves into such high degrees of intoxication that it is unlikely that the rituals were limited to just tobacco. In Sub Saharan and Indian region smoking of cranberries was the main practice and in no time did it change to smoking tobacco.

Smoking with time evolved with its association with different kinds of religious ceremonies; as offerings to deities, in cleansing rituals or to allow shamans and priests to alter their minds for purposes of divination or spiritual enlightenment. After the European exploration and conquest of the Americas, the practice of smoking tobacco quickly spread to the rest of the world. In regions like India and Sub Saharan Africa, it merged with existing practices of smoking cannabis. It is found that Cannabis smoking was very common in the Middle Eastern region well before the arrival of tobacco. In fact it was a very common social activity that centered on hookah, which is a kind of water pipe. Smoking, especially after the introduction of tobacco, was an essential component of Muslim society and culture and became integrated with important traditions such as weddings, funerals and was expressed in architecture, clothing, literature and poetry.

Smoking as a practice had different interpretations in different time frames; holy and sinful, sophisticated and vulgar, a panacea and deadly health hazard. Only relatively recently, and primarily in industrialized Western countries, has smoking come to be viewed in a decidedly negative light.

Smoking tobacco is among the leading causes of many diseases such as lung cancer, heart attacks, erectile dysfunction and can also lead to birth defects. The well-proven health hazards of smoking have caused many countries to institute high taxes on tobacco products and anti-smoking campaigns are launched every year in an attempt to curb tobacco smoking.

The argument goes like gambling is immoral and illegal but on the other side you would see so many people, both young and old falling prey to this addiction called gambling. If gambling is an addiction and it is bad then you and me have to find ways and means to finish it off from the bottom. But what we see today is legitimization of gambling not only in the US, but all over the world. The City of Las Vegas is seen as a role model for business and entertainment purposes. Very few people all over the world are good at gambling.

This makes them heroes to all other gamblers in the making who want to emulate them and imitate them. It is an addiction which destroys homes, makes people go bankrupt destroying homes and families and rendering people jobless. For a gambling addict, the game or bet is his dope. If people want to gamble privately, It should not be thought of as some kind of addiction and has to be stopped but there should be heavy taxes and restrictions on gambling-related businesses to protect the public from harm, something that generally doesn’t happen.

This is one addiction which makes an individual always very hopeful of his luck every time he sits on the table .Gambling addiction doesn’t end with the recurrence of constantly having to play. As with all the other addictions such as with food, alcohol and others, serious results for the gambler and his or her surroundings encompass the addiction. The addiction could also lead to disturbances in the money and emotional fields. In addition feelings of angst, disturbances in relationships and employment negligence could ensue.

To begin treatment for the gambling addiction, the gambler must first confess that he indeed is addicted. In order to bring the gambler to an awareness of the problem and a readiness to admit addiction.Gambling addiction also leads to so many crimes concerned with theft, robbery and anti-social activities which are harmful for everyone involved. And worse of all it could lead to losing friends, jobs, estranging family and in some cases suicide.

Studies show that though many people participate in gambling as a form of recreation or even as a means to gain an income, gambling, like any behavior which involves variation in brain chemistry, can become a psychologically addictive and harmful behavior in some people. Intervention Helps a Lot

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Do you feel your friend needs to stop drinking because it changes him? Is your brother addicted to smoking? It is then time to intervene in his life and convey to him the perils to which your near and dear ones are pushing their life into. This is called as intervention. It is defined as an orchestrated attempt by the family and friends of an individual, which might help someone to put an end to an addiction in general. Interventions have been conducted for long and are considered to be very harmless.

It in general include confrontational meeting with the individual. This meeting is generally attended by a co-dependent family of the individual and a group of close friends. The concept of interventions is not very old. In the decade of ‘60 intervention as a help towards an addict was started by Dr. Vernon Johnson. For years to come this was the technique used for interventions and The Johnson Model was subsequently taught at the Johnson Institute. This model pioneered the way of intervention and till today is used for reference purposes. But there are many who accuse it to be of ambushing nature. But still it is considered to be one of the oldest and tried and tested kinds of models.

Over the past few years the models of interventions have changed and modified. Today the two major ones are called systemic and ARISE model. Both of these are invitational kind of intervention. Instead of pressurizing the addict to change it involves more work from the family and friend, how they should work together to make feel the addict at ease. It basically looks forward to the contribution from the family and friends towards the recovery of the individual. The main emphasis of these methods is not to treat the addict as a patient but with respect and dignity.

Planning an intervention is really a tough job because if it goes wrong it might severely affect an individual. These plans in normally conceived by the concerned group of family, friends. The group almost always include a counselor, who helps the addict understand the main reason for which he should quit the addiction. Those who suffer from addiction understand that it is not easy to quit something which one feels is an integral part of your life.

At times the addict doesn’t agree with the views. The individual in normal cases doesn’t agree to any sort of help or intervention, claiming that he doesn’t need any help or assistance. This is where at times intervention is severely criticized. They say a lot of deception is required from the part of the family and friend, which is normally missing in many cases. There are few who think that this surprising and confrontational approach.

In fact intervention doesn’t just mean help to the addict but also means lot of work for the family and friend who are organizing the intervention. Prior to the intervention they themselves meet the counselor who suggests them about the kind of work they need to put in. They prepare letters and notes for the addict in which they describe their experiences associated with his behavior.

The main aim is to make him realize that the addiction is harming and changing him. It also tries to convey to him the impact his addiction has on others. Besides they also jot down and declare the things they would not be part of with the addict if he doesn’t agree to be part of rehabilitation program. This at times is really helpful as normally the addict is used to the company of those people. The family and friends read their letters to the addict, who then must decide whether to check into the prescribed rehabilitation center or deal with the promised losses.

Interventions are one of the noblest thing which might happen to an addict as it helps them understand that their actions are actually not good for him and for ones near and dear to him.

Why Gamble With Your Life?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Gambling, or gaming is betting money on any game or event. It takes a variety of forms, from nickel-and-dime poker to state-sponsored lotteries. Different forms of gambling are legal in different parts of the United States and many other parts of the world like Macau. Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Typically, the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period. It has its own charm and its own dangers.

Gambling can also be a form of entertainment if handled with the right attitude. A good approach is to aim to win but to also be prepared to lose – and lose only the amount you planned to risk on that day. In other words, you have to accept the fact that you cannot force a winning outcome and you cannot win every time. t is also referred to as a sport sometimes. With all the glamour and glitz associated it has assumed mammoth proportions today as an entertainment industry. Just look at the way the whole of Las Vegas is run.

Studies show that though many people participate in gambling as a form of recreation or even as a means to gain an income, gambling, like any behavior which involves variation in brain chemistry, can become a psychologically addictive and harmful behavior in some people. Reinforcement schedules may also make gamblers persist in gambling even after repeated losses. But unfortunately, gambling also has its ugly face.

In fact, over the past five years addictions to gambling have grown at an accelerated rate. Not only adults, but teenagers are gambling without realizing the consequences. Most states in the USA including Connecticut have created agreements with Indian reservations for self gain. The states are now realizing the negative impact the Indian casino reservations are having on their taxpayers .Gambling is a silent addiction. Most people can go years without anyone ever discovering that they gambled. Besides the local Casino, people can now even gamble online.

As debts build up people turn to other sources of money such as theft, or the sale of drugs. Lot of this pressure comes from bookies or loan sharks that people rely on for capital to gamble with. Also, a teenager that does not receive treatment for pathological gambling when in their desperation phase is likely to contemplate suicide. 20% of teenagers that are pathological gamblers do consider suicide. Abuse is also common in homes where pathological gambling is present. Growing up in such a situation leads to improper emotional development and increased risk of falling prey to problem gambling behavior.

To begin treatment for the gambling addiction, the gambler must first confess that he indeed is addicted. In order to bring the gambler to an awareness of the problem and a readiness to admit addictionGambling addiction doesn’t end with the recurrence of constantly having to play. As with all the other addictions such as with food, alcohol and others, serious results for the gambler and his or her surroundings encompass the addiction. The addiction could also lead to disturbances in the money and emotional fields. In addition feelings of angst, disturbances in relationships and employment negligence could ensue. And worse of all it could lead to losing friends, jobs, estranging family and in some cases suicide.

He needs to be mentally and physically prepared to face the situation and the consequences that he will have to bear to overcome gambling addiction. And this would probably save his life.Gambling addiction is best dealt with when the addict has the will to overcome the problem on his own.

A Sad Way To Lead Life With Alcohol Addiction

Monday, March 15th, 2010

There are many social problems arising from alcoholism which are are and can be significant. Drinking at inappropriate times, and behavior caused by reduced judgment, can lead to legal consequences, such as criminal charges for drunk driving or public disorder, or civil penalties for tortuous behavior. Being drunk or hung over during work hours can result in loss of employment, which can lead to financial problems including the loss of living quarters.

The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors, including social environment, stress, mental health, genetic predisposition, age, ethnicity and gender have been identified.

Alcoholism (alcohol addiction/abuse) is the consumption of or preoccupation with alcoholic beverages to the extent that this behavior interferes with the alcoholic’s normal personal, family, social, or work life. The chronic alcohol consumption caused by alcoholism can result in psychological and physiological disorders.

Getting sloshed causes harm to your relationships, cause you to miss work, and lead to legal problems such as driving while drunk (intoxicated). Alcohol abuse means having unhealthy or dangerous drinking habits, such as drinking every day or drinking too much at a time. When you abuse alcohol, you continue to drink even though you know your drinking is causing problems.

There are many drugs in the market including barbiturates. Detox is another way of dealing with alcoholism.

Many people drink regularly without experiencing any harmful effects, other than perhaps a slight hangover on rare occasions. Yet millions of others suffer from alcoholism and alcohol abuse, making even an occasional drink dangerous.

Furthermore, for those who are predisposed towards alcoholism, drinking in moderation can result in the strengthening of the endorphin-based addiction. Rationing and moderation programs do not mandate complete abstinence. Since one of the effects of alcohol is to reduce a person’s judgment, each drink makes it more difficult to decide that the next drink is a bad idea.

Remember, though, the bottom line is how alcohol affects you. Since drinking is so common in our culture and the effects vary so widely from person to person, it’s not always easy to figure out where the line is between social drinking and problem drinking. If your drinking is causing problems in your life, you have a drinking problem. Taking an honest look at why you drink may help you figure out which side of the line you fall on.
