Is Acupuncture Therapeutic or Not?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Many in modern medicine believe that acupuncture’s benefits, if there are any are entirely related to the Placebo effect-the minds effect on the body. Belief that a treatment is effective makes it effective. The truth of the matter is that, the placebo effect impacts every treatment-including drugs and surgery. It is our belief in the benefit of the treatment and our anticipation of improvement, regardless of the presence of a therapeutic therapy that causes the measurable physiological improvements.

A recent review of acupuncture research studies conducted in the England.

Their comprehensive and careful review of acupuncture for the most common types of chronic pain-back, knee and head between 2003 and 2008.

Acupuncture was statistically better than sham or fake acupuncture for chronic back and knee pain, as well as headaches. Over 6 to 12 months, it was more effective for tension headaches and knee paine, but was not consistent for back pain (one inconclusive, one positive).

Recent research findings about acupuncture’s therapeutic value shows that it is effective, and not merely the result of believing in it. The researchers of this review asked the question as to whether or not it is now time to alter research focus, and redirect it to raising questions about its clinical implication and potential cost effective benefit?

Wby is it so difficult for modern medicine to accept its 5,000 year history? Isn’t that in and of itself strongly suggestive of its effectiveness? Also, almost 40 years ago, when then President Richard Nixon made his historic trip to China, introducing the US to Chinese Medicine in general and acupuncture in particular.

Acupuncture is used in the industrialized world to treat a wide variety of illnesses. While many people find relief, it is usually frowned upon by the medical establishment. Despite this reservation its used and is apparently effective in relieving numerous symptoms, particulary pain.

Five Tips to Prevent Colds and Flu

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

This Fall’s cold and flu season has passed, but school will be starting again after the holidays and this brings about the change in self care activities that preserve and enhance our energy for the coming winter months.

To prepare for the cold and flu season, the Fall is the optimum time to build up the immune system. In traditional Chinese medicine the Fall is the time of harvesting, saving and storing what the abundant summer has produced. This principal applies to the human condition in that we have built strength and muscle and vitamin D stores to serve us through the less active winter months.

5 Means for Self Care

Here’s a brief list of the most important things you can do to enhance your health during the Fall and Winter season:

1. visit an acupuncturist to boost your body’s immune system

2. taking the right mix and dosage of vitamins

3. throughout the day eat well and at regular times

4. regular exercise will help reduce stress and strengthen your body

5. getting enough rest to generate more energy and mental focus

Since colds and flu’s are just beginning to be circulated, these activities all enhance your immune systems and make you less susceptible from the outset. In my practice I’ve found that my clients start reporting colds about 1-3 weeks after school opens.

I use 2 different types of Chinese herbal formulas to prevent colds and flu. The first formula should be started in late Summer/Fall and be taken for two to three months. This will help protect you from catching colds. This formula is a Chinese traditional compound, called “Jade Wind-Screen” and is used for strengthening the immune system. It is very effective and has been in use for thousands of years.

At the first signs of a cold such as sore throat, runny nose, slight fever or chills and body aches, I use the second formula I use I call “Prevent a Cold” and it is based on Yin Qiao Formula (“Yin Chow”). This formula can prevent a cold from getting into the lungs. You take this formula 3-4 times per day for several days to end the cold faster. If you wake in the early morning with a scratchy throat or runny nose start taking the herbs and monitor symptoms throughout the day while continuing to take the formula. If the symptoms go away stop the formula but be ready to start the formula again at the first signs of a cold coming back. You can do this for several days but if symptoms do progress to a full blown cold then a more individualized formula will be necessary. Whenever you take herbs pay attention to how it effects your digestion. If you have any digestive problems should discontinue the formula and call your acupuncturist.

If you are worried about the H1N1 influenza virus that has been reported in the news the most important first step is being as healthy as you can. Using the Jade Wind-Screen formula will help as well as getting proper rest and nutrition. If you think you have come down with the flu you should also call your doctor.

Super Supplement for Cold and Flu Prevention

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

We are now deep into the winter season so I will continue to write about cold and flu prevention. Hopefully you are already taking some preventative measures.

I have some recommendations based upon years of experience and some recent vitamin deficiency studies on Vitamin A & D. For example, at a Wisconsin care facility where 275 children live, they had been tested for Vitamin D deficiencies and were supplemented with Vitamin D. They were exposed to the H1N1 flu in June 2009 when a new resident, who was ill with the H1N1 virus, moved into the facility. Only 1 child came down with the H1N1 flu. However over 70 staff members who were not tested and had no supplemental Vitamin D came down with flu symptoms. People who have become ill with H1N1 and been tested afterwards have shown a clear lack of Vitamins A & D. Why does having Vitamin A&D deficiency make you more susceptible to getting the H1N1 flu? Mainly, these vitamins have been proven to boost immunity.

Let me tell you why Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins in the prevention of colds and flu.

Vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin” because it is made in the body only when the skin is exposed to sunlight. Many people do not get nearly enough sun exposure and if they do they have covered the skin with sun block or clothing which prevents Vitamin D from forming. We have always known that Vitamin D is the escort of Calcium into the bones but in the last decade many more uses for Vitamin D have been discovered.

Vitamin D can prevent colds and flu by helping to maintain a healthy immune system. If you think about when we are getting colds and flu and it’s during the darkest months of the year. Since the 1940’s milk has been fortified with Vitamin D which was the first vitamin to be manufactured in a lab and added to our food supply. Vitamin D2 was formulated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and it was very cheep to produce. The problem with D2 is it does not convert well to activated Vitamin D in the body and at high doses it can be toxic. The RDA recommended daily allowance was set at 400IUs which turns out to be extremely low. Now we are finding that due to our lack of Vitamin D and the inferior quality of the fortified foods, Vitamin D deficiency is at epidemic proportions.

Three simple ways to guarantee you get enough Vitamin D

1. Get your blood tested for Vitamin D. I can order an inexpensive test for you. Ask me about this at your next phone consultation or e-mail me.

2. Select the right foods. Foods that contain Vitamin D, are the foods with fat. Low fat foods will not provide Vitamin D. The food highest in Vitamin D is Cod Liver Oil. Other sources are deep water fatty fish like salmon, oysters, organ meats, egg yolk and butter. Fortified foods include dairy products and cereal grains but the amounts added can be erratic and if the form is Vitamin D2 it is not easily assimilated in the body. Also these fortified products need to be eaten with fat so nonfat milk is not going to help Vitamin D levels.

3. Supplements will help you to intake sufficient levels of Vitamin D. Like I mentioned first get your blood tested so I can help you determine your level of deficiency. Then I can help you supplement accordingly.

In order to get enough Vitamin A, the easiest way to do this is by consuming fresh fruits and vegetables. Cod Liver Oil is also a source of Vitamin A. It is important to not to get too much vitamin A in supplement form as it can be toxic so eating lots of fresh fruits and veggies is the safest way to get Vitamin A in your diet.

In addition to consuming more Vitamin A and D think about what daily habits may be contributing factors in compromising your resistance to colds and flu:

* Rest: Do you get enough rest or are you trying to get by on 6 hours of sleep or less? * Easting: Are you eating regularly or are you snacking throughout the day? * Digestion: Is your stomach digestion working properly? * Exercise: Do you get regular exercise each week?

All the above factors sound very simple but they do take a personal plan and some effort to take care of ones self. I can help you by designing a personal plan to enhance your immune system to help you deal with the cold and flu season. Give me a call to discuss your options.

Acupuncture Technique

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Utilizing acupuncture for fertility benefits may be beneficial to patients suffering from infertility or with fertility complications. Acupuncture is a Chinese medical technique that sticks thin needles into various points on the body.

The stimulation of these needles will help in the opening of pathways that has an impact on the functioning of the human body. Normally, the practitioners use the method of conjunction with either western medical treatments or herbs for treating several fertility complications as well as diseases. The ‘American Board of Oriental Reproductive Medicine certifies as well as trains the individuals to do this therapy for curing infertility problems.

You will get to know the complete information regarding the acupuncture as well as different herbal medicine treatments during the training period. You must also understand about the western medicine that will be asked for almost half of the exams during the training period in order to become certified. Patients can easily get the information about the certification as well as training of individuals for acupuncture fertility treatment from a trained professional or through consulting the ABNORM.

Acupuncture may be an effective treatment for patients suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, low sperm count, poor egg quality and low ovarian reserve. Patients with an increased maternal age, those with sperm DNA fragmentation and who experience recurrent miscarriages may also be candidates for this treatment. Those suffering from immunological causes of infertility, implantation failures, patients undergoing in vitro fertilization or other assisted reproductive technology treatments and those with unexplained infertility problems may also be candidates for acupuncture.

Acupuncture is based on the belief that the body’s life energy, called Qi, flows through the body, protecting it from illness, pain and diseases. The belief states that stress, trauma, poor diet and a lack of exercise may block or interrupt the energy, which may lead to infertility among other things. The needles are placed into the body at different depths and locations to release the energy. Practitioners believe that by releasing positive energy, negative energy is pushed out of the body.

The patient must lie still while treatment is being administered and the needles are stimulated. Each session may last 20 to 30 minutes. When used with other fertility treatments, acupuncture may be successful in helping women relieve stress and increase blood flow to the uterus, which may lead to positive results for those suffering from fertility issues.

This therapy may also reduce the side effects of fertility drugs and may help to strengthen the immune system.

If you are interested in getting more information regarding this technique, consulting a practitioner is the best thing to do.

How St. Paul MN Acupuncture Specialist Dr. Robert Thatcher Helps Locals Live Pain-free

Monday, January 18th, 2010

There are thousands of years of Chinese medical knowledge that is now in St. Paul acupuncture treatment centers. Acupuncture has been used with great success for a long time in China and is now becoming known in western nations for its ability to help treat several different health problems. This style of medicine is a holistic medicine because it looks at the underlying causes of health conditions.

In an acupuncture treatment session your specialist will discuss your health with you and assess your health needs. Following the assessment they will apply fine, sterilized needles just under the skin. These are placed in areas that according to acupuncture theory can release blocked energy that is causing your health problem and allow it to flow around the body properly.

According to the principles of acupuncture, the body has energy flowing through different channels in the body. Sometimes these channels become clogged and the energy cannot pass around the body without obstruction and this causes problems. The aim of acupuncture is to use the needles on certain body points to free the energy and let it move around effectively.

Acupuncture can be very beneficial towards different pain causes. A St. Paul acupuncture specialist that deals in pain relief is Dr. Robert Thatcher. He is experience in helping to treat arthritis pain, migraine, headaches, period pain, osteoarthritis, muscle pain, back pain and neck pain.

Some people are concerned about visiting a St. Paul acupuncture center, because they are scared of the idea of needles. Acupuncture is not a painful procedure since the needles used are very thin and are merely placed just below the skin surface, not deep into the muscle or tissue.

When you are suffering from any type of body pain, you should pay a visit to a St. Paul acupuncture clinic in order to discuss the treatment options and procedures that the specialists may be able to provide.

More than 3000 years of medical expertise is now available through St. Paul acupuncture centers. Acupuncture has been used successfully for generations in China and now the West is starting to learn and accept the treatment. More info now on http://www.handw.net/

Include Acupuncture In Your Weight Loss Plan

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Nowadays, a lot of people are becoming more conscious of their health and well-being. A lot of people, especially females, are interested on how to lose weight and stay fit and sexy. Can acupuncture be the best option available?

Losing weight definitely feels good and most people want to lose weight to look better. However, just by losing that extra fat and body mass will decrease your chance of getting serious diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension. Losing that weight will help build up confidence so it will also help decrease stress. In this day and age, losing weight and maintaining weight is a goal for a lot of people.

A lot of methods, procedures, and supplements are also available to help us lose weight; one of which is acupuncture. Most of us, however, might be quite skeptic about this alternative procedure. Most of us would ask, how can pricking one’s ear help that person lose weight? Although this seems too good to be true or unbelievable, a lot of studies have been conducted to support the effectiveness of the said procedure.

Throughout the centuries, acupuncture has been used to cured a large number of sicknesses. To most people it just looks like randomly putting needles in your skin, but it actually is used to stimulate certain anatomic points within the body. These points found throughout the body are linked to various vital organ and stimulating the points can help with healing.

The effectiveness of acupuncture for therapeutic purposes has long been established. However, using this procedure to lose weight is something that has just been recently put into practice. Many practitioners of this technique believe that the desire to eat and the tendency to gain weight are caused by other factors or abnormalities such as stress or problems in the lungs, kidney and other vital organs. Thus, addressing these problems would in turn address the issue of losing weight.

How does acupuncture help someone lose weight? The most common procedure is by using ear staples, since the ear is the most important point in terms of weight loss. A needle is inserted into someone’s ear. If the person feels an unnecessary urge to eat, pressure is applied to the needle in order to release endorphins, which are known to help people relax and feel happy. Other points that are pierced include the stomach, lungs, endocrine, spleen, kidney and thyroid.

The procedure could take a while, but acupuncture produces long-term and permanent results. The key factor is that once a person is able to control the urge to eat unnecessarily, he or she will eventually be able to control the urge to eat naturally. Unlike artificial means of losing weight through diet pills, for example, you won’t have to worry about gaining weight even if the ear staples are gone. Aside from losing weight, you are also able to manage stress and stay healthy despite your busy schedule or fast-paced lifestyle.
