Using Acupuncture In The Treatment Of Heart Disease Shows Substantial Promise

Monday, March 15th, 2010

There are many pharmaceutical drugs nowadays that may be utilized in the treatment of cardiovascular disease. However, with any drug a person takes a chance on the possibility of unwanted effects. Consequently, many individuals are looking at alternative medicine to enhance their cardiovascular health and treat heart disease without the dangerous side effects of drugs. Acupuncture specifically is becoming increasingly popular in the management or prevention of heart problems.

This branch of traditional Chinese medicine makes use of extremely slender needles that are located strategically in the body to improve health and heal disease. The basis of this procedure is that the movement of energy throughout your body becomes blocked for whatever reason, and this leads to sickness. Acupuncture helps to unblock and redirect that energy. And scientific research lends support to the positive outcomes that are enjoyed by many individuals.

Studies have shown that acupuncture may be used to decrease blood pressure and thus decrease the risk of heart disease. It has also been demonstrated to lessen the occurrence of angina, which involves spasms of the blood vessels within the heart that result in pain. And people who had been treated by acupuncture for angina were able to recuperate more quickly from an attack than the people on pharmaceutical treatment.

Acupuncture is generally pain-free since the needles used are so slender. It can also be a relaxing experience. Once the needles are inserted into your body, you lie peacefully for a few minutes and just relax.

It typically requires a number of sessions to get the results you’re looking for with acupuncture. Yet the cost and time may be worth it as acupuncture has no detrimental side effects and could lessen your reliance on high-priced prescription drugs.

Before you consult an acupuncturist, you will want to confirm that he or she is licensed through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. This ensures that they possess an acceptable amount of education and that they continue to expand their understanding of this form of medicine.

Some insurance providers will cover acupuncture, however, many people will likely be required to pay out of pocket. Visits vary considerably in price around the country. It’s best to call various practitioners in your region to determine the standard rate.

Some individuals are unsure of the efficacy of alternative medicine therapies, yet a brief look on the web will show you that science is beginning to come around to this ancient form of healing. The Chinese have been engaging in it for hundreds of years, and Westerners are the ones behind the times. Studies are verifying what a lot of people have accepted for a long time – acupuncture is effective in a large number of cases.

A healthy heart involves making long-term changes that will decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. Numerous Practical Purposes For The Age Old Art Of Acupuncture

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Whether you are treating a disease or are simply curious, acupuncture can be a good way to satisfy both. Acupuncture has been long used to treat common ailments and complex diseases. There have been no conclusive studies as to how effective it is, but many patients believe in its effectiveness.

Acupuncture first emerged in China thousands of years ago, and has been in use ever since. Ancient Chinese laws did not allow for surgery, so this technique was developed out of necessity. The basic practice is to push sharpened needles into the top layer, or just past the top layer of skin. Where the needles are placed depends on the exact diagnosis and illness associated.

The first step when being treated is to be properly diagnosed. Practitioners will typically examine the patient, paying close attention to areas on the head such as the tongue. Many complex questions will be asked before an individualized method is developed. The patient will lie down, usually on a medical table and told to relax. Long stainless steel needles are pressed into different areas of the skin. After a period of time, the needles are pulled out and the treatment is over. One or several appointments will be needed.

Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and even the common cold have been treated with varied results. Sometimes, people who have exhausted all other medical options will use this as an alternate method or just to help with pain. Just about anyone can schedule an appointment as long as they have some sort of minor ailment.

If you are not sure where to start your quest for an acupuncturist, try looking in established Chinese communities. There will often be a variety of reputable practitioners in these areas. Chiropractors have been increasingly offering alternative medicine services as well. Another good place to look are learning centers. Just look in the same types of places that traditional doctors are known to have offices.

Safety should be your number one priority when selecting a specialist. Qualified acupuncturists will have the proper certification as well as a registered office where they operate. All needles need to be properly sterilized, so be sure to ask the practitioner about their procedures. Don’t worry about offending the practitioner, as these are all standard questions most people ask. Some side effects should be expected so check with the acupuncturist about what you should expect.

No one should needlessly suffer from any medical disorder, especially when numerous options exist to treat most ailments. Whether you are seeking an alternative to Western medicine or are just looking for something non-invasive, acupuncture can provide relief. Take the time to find a trusted professional and begin the process of trying a popular alternative to traditional medicine.

Western practitioners have tapped into the acupunctural market by training individuals – doctors and non-physicians – in an art of the ancients. The procedures include facial acupuncture and even acupuncture and infertility treatments. To find out more free information, visit our website now.

Acupuncture Relieves Depression in Pregnant Women

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Presenters at the recent Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine’s (SMFM) annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting , held in Chicago, IL, unveiled findings that show that acupuncture may be an effective treatment for depression during pregnancy.

One of the study’s authors, Dr. Schnyer stated, “Depression during pregnancy is an issue of concern because it has negative effects on the mother and the baby as well as the rest of the family.”

Even though depression in pregnant women occurs on the same level as it does among women of the same age who aren’t pregnant and women during the postpartum (after birth) period, fewer treatment studies have been conducted on pregnant depressed women.

Anti-depressant treatment during pregnancy can affect the developing baby and mothers as well.

The 150 study participants with Major Depressive Disorder were randomly placed in one of three groups: one that received acupuncture specific depression treatment; one that received control acupuncture-they received acupuncture that was not specific for depression and the last received massage.

During 2 months, the women received 12 sessions. Junior acupuncturists unaware of the treatment group assignment needled the participants at point prescribed by senior acupuncturists. The mother’s depression symptoms were evaluated at the beginning, after four and eight weeks of treatment.

The women in the acupuncture specific treatment experienced much greater decrease in the severity of their symptoms compared to both control groups or the non-specific acupuncture group alone. They also had a higher response rate thant the combined controls or the control acupuncture alone. The reduction of symptoms and response rates did not differ greatly between the two control groups.

Mild and transient side effects were reported by 43/150 participants (4 in massage; 19 in the control acupuncture and 20 in the depression specific group). Significantly fewer participants reported side-effects in the massage group than the two acupuncture groups.

Dr. Schyner said, “The results of our study show that the acupuncture protocol we tested could be a viable treatment option for depression during pregnancy.
