It is important that the corners be set on the foundation exactly as given on the detail drawing on the foundation plan. All 8″ blocks-the standard unit-are actually 7-5/8″ in width. This allows for the thickness of the mortar on the finished job.

If you are building a wall for a home addition, garage or other structure, it is important to be able to read construction drawings to identify all the dimensions for the walls which are given on the floor plan and elevation. The walls are to be laid out the same as on the floor plan, with all measurements followed exactly. The openings for doors and windows must be placed exactly. It is important that the corners be set on the foundation exactly as given on the detail drawing on the foundation plan. Taking measurements from the foundation or floor plan, and transferring those measurements to the foundation, footing or floor slab is the first step in laying out the wall.

Before starting to lay the blocks, drive stakes into the ground and build a form at each corner. These stakes and forms can be made from scrap pieces of wood used on the job. Locate the exact corner by stretching lines from one corner form to the other. The exact corner will be the point at which the two lines cross. Drop a plumb bob down from each line, both at the corner point where the lines cross and at positions about 2′ out in each direction.

Make sure the mason’s line is stretched taut and attached to the line holder at each corner. The line should be no further away than 1/8″ from the face of the wall, and when the block is set into the mortar to form a 3/8″ mortar joint, the top of the block should be even with top of the mason’s line. Allowing the block to touch the mason’s line is called “crowding the line” and could cause a bulge in the wall.

Masonry units can be cut to length when necessary to fit around windows and doors or to build a foundation to precise dimensions (see “Cutting Masonry Units,” left). But cutting them along their length – what carpenters would call ripping – is another matter altogether. To avoid this aggravating job, masons usually begin course layout from the top, establishing a finish elevation and then measuring and marking down, in full courses, from that point.

In the past, bricks came in many different shapes and sizes, but today’s modern bricks tend to be a standard size of around 8″ x 4″ x 2″. Bricks for building may be made from clay, shale, soft slate, calcium silicate, concrete, or shaped from quarried stone. However, true bricks are ceramic, and therefore created by the action of heat and cooling. Clay is the most common material, with modern clay bricks formed in one of three processes – soft mud, dry press, or extruded. Bricks are used for building and pavement. In the USA, brick pavement was found incapable of withstanding heavy traffic, but it is coming back into use as a method of traffic calming or as a decorative surface in pedestrian precincts. For example, in the early 1900s, most of the streets in the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan were paved with brick. Today, there are only about 20 blocks of brick paved streets remaining.

Modern methods of brick manufacture are highly mechanised and automated procedures whereby clay is extruded in a continuous column, wirecut into bricks, and hydraulically pressed to ensure resistance to weathering. The bricks are then dried and slow fired at around 1000 – 1200 C. In more recent times, recycled glass and other waste materials have been introduced into this process. These materials have been found to reduce firing times, temperatures and toxic emissions, improve brick strength and durability, and reduce waste going to landfill.

A masonry veneer wall consists of masonry units, usually clay-based bricks, installed on one or both sides of a structurally independent wall usually constructed of wood or masonry. In this context the brick masonry is primarily decorative, not structural. The brick veneer is generally connected to the structural wall by brick ties (metal strips that are attached to the structural wall, as well as the mortar joints of the brick veneer). There is typically an air gap between the brick veneer and the structural wall. As clay-based brick is usually not completely waterproof, the structural wall will often have a water-resistant surface (usually tar paper) and weep holes can be left at the base of the brick veneer to drain moisture that accumulates inside the air gap. Concrete blocks, real and cultured stones, and veneer adobe are sometimes used in a very similar veneer fashion.

Clay brick manufacture uses energy but the investment of embodied energy is repaid by the longevity of the material. Clay brick homes have a long life, low maintenance requirements and are highly recyclable making them a potentially sustainable form of construction. Clay bricks can often be reclaimed for re-use when a building is demolished. After cleaning they can either be directly re-used as bricks again, or they can be crushed for making path and road surfaces. Because of their inert, inorganic nature, another use for crushed clay bricks is as part of the mix for the growing medium of extensive green roofs.
