Recent research has shown that glutathione is extremely important to human health. Known as the “master antioxidant”, this chemical helps regulate metabolism and detoxify the body. This article will discuss the role of antioxidants in the body, the specific properties of glutathione, and review some common glutathione supplements.

Oxygen is the key to many forms of life. It functions as a reactive agent during many of the chemical reactions that take place during metabolism. However, the by-products of these reactions, known as free radicals, are toxic and can cause a lot of damage to the tissues in the body.

Free radicals are very chemically unstable, and will initiate reactions with whatever they run into. This in turn can cause a great deal of damage to the cell. In order to protect itself from free radicals, the body creates antioxidants. There are two general types of antioxidant, those that are water soluble and those that are fat soluble. Antioxidants basically work by either blocking the production of free radicals or by attaching to them and removing them from the cell. As such, antioxidants are vital to maintaining health.

While vitamins C and E are probably among the best known antioxidants, recent research has pointed the importance of glutathione. What makes glutathione special is that it is produced naturally by the body and it is found directly inside cell, where it can do the most good. Glutathione is also found in particularly high concentrations in the liver and seems to be involved in helping the liver processes and remove various types of toxins from the body.

Science still does not fully understand the connection between glutathione levels and health. However, research has shown that people who suffer from serious illnesses such as AIDS or cancer also have very low levels of glutathione. Also, one study demonstrated that women who received glutathione injections along with chemotherapy as part of ovarian cancer treatment fared better overall then those who just received chemo. Altogether this may suggest that glutathione is a key ingredient to good health.

As such, glutathione supplements have become the new rage in nutrition circles. However, be careful before you go out and by glutathione pills. Most of these pills won’t work as this particular antioxidant is not absorbed by the GI track. Instead looks for compounds that contain cystein, glutamic acid, and glycene, the compound that make up glutathione.

You can add cystein, glutamic acid, and glycene to your diet easily by consuming foods that are high in protein (and thus a good source of cystein) along with dark green, leafy vegetable. What is the definition of irony? How about sitting in your car, waiting to go through the Walgreens drive through to pick up your weight loss medicine? Or maybe your high blood pressure or high cholesterol pills? Okay, to be fair (and PC) perhaps some of these are handicapped or injured people who cannot walk into the pharmacy to pick up their medicine. But I am certain a large percentage of them are just like a lot of Americans these days: overweight and lazy.

Since I’m the owner of a St. Louis home care agency that works primarily with elderly clients, I am acutely aware of what happens to our minds and bodies as the years go by. I also keep on top of all the research. I doubt many of the people would still be sitting in their cars at the drive through if they read the research I have and saw the things I see each and every day.

There is really no longer any debate. Being active and exercising is probably the most protective medicine we have for our minds as we age. Several recent studies have shown improvement in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) when the subjects exercised regularly. This is important because about 15% of those with MCI can expect to progress to Alzheimer’s. And older adults who keep active have a nearly 40% reduction in even getting MCI. We are realizing that we need to focus on prevention of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s or, short of that, fighting them as early on as possible.

When someone is exposed to long term physical and mental stress, they suffer from something called oxidative stress. And suffering from oxidative stress makes the brain more susceptible to diseases such as Alzheimer’s, other forms of dementia and Parkinson’s.

Getting regular aerobic exercise at least 5 days per week can actually shield the brain from this stress. Strength training is important too. Recently researchers assessed the strength of about 1000 dementia free people aged 54 to 100. They followed the group for 4 years noting the strength of nine major muscle groups. Those who ranked in the top ten percent for strength had a whopping 61% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s than the lowest 10%!

And there’s more! A study published in 2008 in the journal Neurology detailed the findings of a study started in the 1960s and 1970s where the researchers measured the midsections of around 6500 adults. Researchers then followed up with the subjects 36 years later and found those with the largest midsections in middle age were three times more likely to suffer from dementia as compared to those who had the lowest amount of fat in their midsections.

Even as a normal brain ages, loss of neuronal connections, blockages of blood supply and decrease in nerve-signaling chemicals all factor in to decline of brain function. For a long time we thought it was impossible to grow new brain cells. Turns out this is not true. Studies by Fred Gage, Ph.D. and colleagues at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have shown the more physical exercise you get, the more brain cells you grow, the longer they live and the better they connect with other cells. Brisk walking for just 40 minutes four times/week increases the blood flow to areas of the brain that are able to grow new brain cells. He has concluded that movement is so vital to brain health that a lot of the cognitive decline we conclude is inevitable due to the aging process is really due to being couch potatoes.

Hopefully this will give you reason to pause the next time you start to pull into the Walgreen’s drive thru. Next time I challenge you to park at the far end of the lot and walk in to get your medicine. Who knows, if you keep up that mindset, one day you may not even need that prescription!

One of the best predictors of aging is your own perception of just how healthy you truly are. How would you compare your health to other people of your own age?

Assuming we answered honestly, a Fair or Poor rating suggests that you’re 30 times more likely to die within the next 2 years than someone else whose health rating was better. Ouch! The point here, simply, is to make ourselves realize only we can control our health, because only you really knows how you feel. You may even admit that you’re doing things that undermine your long-term health expectations. We’re fortunate, though, because recent scientific findings strongly suggest we can, to a large extent, control our aging processes. But first, a re-thinking of what we think we know about getting older.

Scientists who have studied the numerous systems in the human body discovered that each process is, in essence, designed to perpetuate the human species. In other words, the evolutionary processes that have been occurring over the thousands of millennia prioritize the survival of your genes over the survival of your individual life. These systems are only designed to give you protection during your years of reproduction and child-rearing.

It is a two-edged sword, though – the same biological processes that sustain us so well during our reproductive years begin to deteriorate soon after that, and can and do begin working against you (i.e., how we age). Instead of viewing the aging process through our own personal perspectives, look at it through the perspective of genetics and it all starts to make sense. In other words, the aging process is really just an afterthought in life’s master plan.

Human bodies, as strong as they are, are also like everything else – they occasionally break. Whether it is an acute injury like a torn knee ligament, or just the normal wear and tear kind of breakage we experience over the years, the real factor in living longer is not so much avoiding injury (it is important, though!) as it is being able to rebound from it. Our bodies, then, are primarily designed to repair themselves as effectively and efficiently as they can.

If we consider your car’s lifespan to be similar to your own, we all know that a little preventive maintenance goes a long way to getting the most out of it. Aging occurs because our cells, over time, lose their ability to regenerate themselves. Because of what we now know about the scientific causes of aging, it’s more possible now than ever to do things that help boost their resilience. Another hundred thousand miles isn’t out of the question!

Aging is not only about genetics and internal cellular processes; it’s also about external factors like stress, slippery sidewalks, and nutrition. How you respond to, adapt to, and otherwise deal with those factors helps determine your rate of aging. A person’s rate of aging doubles, in effect, every 8 years. This is, in a nutshell, what we’re trying to manage – our rate of aging.

Most people just assume that getting older is an unavoidable given, and that it’s best to just get used to the idea. New scientific research, though, is helping us find things that we can do to postpone – if not avoid – those dreary outcomes if we’re willing to nudge ourselves gently in the right direction. Addressing these weak areas can pay off in many more years of living, and it’s never too late to begin.

As we have already stated, diet high in purines can spark gout. High purine foods include offal and organ meat, beef, lamb, seafood and a lot of alcoholic beverages. Medical conditions which are known to increase levels of uric acid, such as high blood pressure and poor kidney function.

Research Reveals Surgery for Osteoarthritis of the Knee Proven Worthless!

The NY Times issue of July 11, 2002 stated that arthroscopic surgery on the knee for the symptoms due to osteoarthritis is performed on over 200,000 middle-aged and older Americans each year at a cost of more than a billion dollars to Medicare, the Department of Veterans Affairs and private insurers. When medical conservative treatment does not help osteoarthritic knee pain, procedures such as arthroscopic lavage or debridement are often used to help those that are suffering. Over 650,000 such procedures are performed every year at a cost of about $5,000 each. As more and more people search for alternative therapies such as physical therapy and chiropractic care, this research has much importance. The New England Journal of Medicine reported on the results of a randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopy for osteoarthritis of the knee. 180 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were randomly assigned to receive arthroscopic debridement, arthroscopic lavage or placebo surgery. The placebo group received only skin incisions and underwent a simulated arthroscopic operation but the arthroscope was not inserted. The patients in the study were informed that they might not receive actual surgery. The placebo group received a short-acting intravenous tranquilizer while the surgical group received the standard general anesthesia. The patients that received the placebo were kept in the operating room for the same amount of time as the surgical patients, and spent the night after the procedure in the hospital being cared for by nurses who “were unaware of the treatment-group assignment.”

All the patients received the same medical walking aids, graduated exercise and analgesics. For the placebo patients, during the “operation” the doctor asked for all instruments and manipulated the knee as if arthroscopy were being performed. To simulate the treatment, saline was splashed to simulate the sounds of lavage in case the patient was partly conscious during the operation. The surgical patients were lavaged with at least ten liters of fluid to flush and cleanse the knee of painful debris and inflammatory enzymes. Torn portions of meniscus were removed, and the remaining meniscus was smoothed to a firm, stable rim. Rough articular cartilage was shaved, loose debris was removed, and any bone spurs on the tibial spine that blocked full extension were also shaved smooth.

Only one surgeon was used, who did not know the procedure until he opened an envelope at the time of the operation. The surgeon was board-certified; trained in arthroscopy and sports medicine (fellowships); in practice for 10 years in an academic medical center; and currently the orthopedic surgeon for a National Basketball Association team. He was also the physician for the men’s and women’s U.S. Olympic basketball teams in 1996.

The patients were assessed regularly during and after the procedure. The authors of the study even determined whether there may have been some clinically important benefits they may have missed in the surgical group due to their small sample size. For the comparisons they questioned, the 95 percent confidence intervals did not contain any important differences, indicating that there was not a clinically important improvement the study had simply failed to detect. The final conclusion of the study was “the outcomes after arthroscopic lavage or arthroscopic debridement were no better than those after a placebo procedure.”
